Alexia Robbemont, a personal matchmaker and love expert at Quality Partner Search, with 12 years of experience in the matchmaking industry, shares her insights in an interview with Libelle, a weekly women’s magazine, about women finding love after 50.

Common Mistake

One of the biggest mistakes women make is being too selective and focusing on the wrong things. A man can be ruled out because he’s too short, works in the wrong profession, or lives too far. However, these details do not show whether he is emotionally mature, whether a woman can be completely herself around him, or will he invest IN the relationship as much as she does. These are qualities that can’t be determined by a profile picture or date of birth.

Assumptions about blended families can also make dating more challenging for women. Concerns about a new partner and existing children may stand in the way of a relationship. However, a new partner does not have to become a surrogate mother and doesn’t necessarily have to move in. Instead, both people can simply find an arrangement that suits them.

Dating can also bring personal patterns to the surface. If a woman never gets a second date, she may need to look at what she is doing or projecting during those dates. That’s why she offers an intensive 6 month program for people who are facing this issue. This program is pretty intensive, but afterward, things almost always work out.

Dating Feels Different After 50

Dating after 50 is approached much more cautiously than when people are younger, as they have already lived through important parts of life. Divorce, raising children, building a career, and disappointments can all shape how someone approaches a new relationship.

There is also a positive side to dating later in life. People often know much better what suits them and what they want.

Finding Love in the Digital Age

Alexia also believes that online dating can work for people over 50 who are looking for a meaningful relationship. But she says many people give up too quickly when they do not immediately find someone they connect with.

She compares dating apps to walking down a busy street. Among the many people in a crowd, only a few might stand out as someone worth going on a date with. Dating apps work in much the same way. Out of the many profiles, only a small number may be a good potential match for a relationship.

There Is No Perfect Formula

There is no fixed formula for the perfect first date. For Alexia, authenticity in behavior and communication is essential. Making a little extra effort is fine, but she advises against going overboard. She also recommends that a first date should generally last no longer than two to three hours.

For those returning to dating later in life, Alexia has one simple piece of advice: “Go into a date as open-minded as possible.”

If someone is too anxious to approach a date with an open mind, she recommends working on that first. Going into a date with fear can make it difficult for the connection to develop.
