  • Dr. Helen Fisher: The Pioneer Behind Research in Human Love

    Dr. Helen Fisher

    Global Love Report – August 28th, 2024

The dating industry has experienced remarkable growth. Behind the growth of this industry, research plays a crucial role in understanding human relationships, leading to the development of knowledge that can provide deeper insights and create innovative solutions.

One of the pioneers of this industry is Dr. Helen Fisher. She was an anthropologist, Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at NeuroColor, Senior Research Fellow at the Kinsey Institute, and Chief Scientific Advisor for Match.com. Dr. Fisher made significant contributions to the understanding of love and relationships. Her extensive studies on human sexuality, love, marriage, and gender differences in the brain revolutionized the dating industry.

Dr. Fisher’s scientific publications, including her seminal work “Anatomy of Love,” presented groundbreaking theories about the evolution of partnership and the biological factors influencing romantic relationships. In 2004, she released a book titled “Why We Love: The Nature and Chemistry of Romantic Love,” in which she eloquently stated, “Romantic love is deeply embedded in the architecture and chemistry of the human brain.”

Her book caught the attention of Match.com, leading to a collaboration that sparked a crucial question shaping her future research: “Could we have evolved biological patterns that naturally draw us to certain people rather than others?” In 2010, she co-founded the influential Singles in America survey, a collaboration between the Match Group and the Kinsey Institute, which continues to provide cutting-edge insights into dating and relationship trends.

One of Dr. Fisher’s most notable works was her 2009 book “Why Him? Why Her?” In this work, Dr. Fisher introduced four broad, biologically-based styles of thinking and behaving, linked with the dopamine, serotonin, testosterone, and estrogen systems in the brain. Dr. Fisher termed these personality types Explorer, Builder, Director, and Negotiator.

To support this theory, Dr. Fisher developed the Fisher Temperament Inventory (FTI), a personality questionnaire based directly on brain physiology. This assessment has been taken by over 15 million people across 40 countries and has been validated by fMRI brain scanning experiments. The FTI helps individuals understand their natural thinking and behavioral styles, as well as recognize these traits in others.

Using data from thousands of Americans, Dr. Fisher explained in her book why we are attracted to certain people and not others. Dr. Fisher provided insights on how to use this neuroscientific understanding to find compatible partners and build lasting relationships. This work has significantly impacted the dating industry, influencing matchmaking algorithms and helping individuals better comprehend their relationship dynamics.

Dr. Fisher’s curiosity extended to complex relationship issues, as demonstrated in her interview for “A Practitioner’s Guide To Working With Couples.” Here, she explored the biological components potentially underlying infidelity, offering a fresh perspective beyond traditional psychological and cultural explanations.

By approaching human relationships through the lens of biology and evolution, Dr. Fisher provided a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of love and relationships.

Throughout her career, Dr. Fisher developed innovative tools to help individuals and couples gain profound insights into their personalities, motivations, and relationship dynamics. Her work transcended the dating industry, influencing couple counseling and marketing strategy development. The widespread appeal of her research was evident in the popularity of her TED Talks on the science of love, which amassed over 22 million views.

Dr. Helen Fisher’s passing is a profound loss for those of us working in the dating and matchmaking industry. Her pioneering work revolutionized our understanding of love, leaving an indelible mark. We are deeply grateful for her dedication to unraveling the mysteries of human relationships, which continues to inspire and guide matchmakers, dating coaches, and singles.

  • Understanding Niche Business Models in Matchmaking Services

Niche Business Models in Matchmaking Services

    Global Love Report – August 21st, 2024
    Written by Margaret W

The offline dating industry, particularly matchmaking, is a niche market that continues to evolve and grow. Within the matchmaking industry, there are “niches within niches,” where services focus on specific customer segments based on characteristics such as age, income, or ethnicity.

Key Aspects to Consider When Building a Niche Matchmaking Business

To build a successful niche matchmaking service, it’s crucial to understand your target market from several aspects such as demographics, psychographics, and firmographics.

    1. Demographics: This key aspect considers factors such as age range, ethnicity, and income levels that you might consider specializing in.
    2. Psychographics: Understanding the behaviors and attitudes of your target clients enables you to empathize with them, helping you better understand and assist them in finding their match. It also allows you to develop tailored solutions based on their psychographic profiles in matchmaking.
    3. Firmographics: For business-oriented matchmaking, it’s important to understand the types of industries, organization sizes, and potential future income that your matchmaking business could target.

Learning from Successful Niche Matchmaking Services

    LGBTQ+ Matchmaking

H4M Matchmaking, founded by Tammy Shaklee, helps US-based LGBTQ+ singles, ages 20 to 80, find love. Another example is Little Gay Book, founded by Dr. Frankie Bashan in 2009, which tailors its services to both shy introverts and confident extroverts to help them find a match. These services highlight the importance of understanding the unique demographic and psychological needs of the LGBTQ+ community.

    Asian Matchmaking

Justine Kuriyama of Pacific Match Global, leverages her international experience, multilingual skills, and various certifications in matchmaking and counseling to connect clients across cultural boundaries. Another example is Two Asian Matchmakers, founded by May Bugenhagen in 2009. Specializing in Asian dating across major U.S. cities, Bugenhagen’s service has facilitated over 483 successful matches, demonstrating how niche matchmakers can effectively serve specific cultural demographics while achieving impressive results.

    High-End Matchmaking

This niche demonstrates the value of tailoring services to a specific market segment, particularly in terms of income level. While lucrative, this niche requires substantial resources, connections, and expertise that many matchmakers may find difficult to acquire. For example, Millionaire’s Club, founded by Patti Stanger, caters to wealthy professionals and celebrities who need to find partners that have the best compatibility in social status. Another example is Bonnie Winston, Founder & President of Bonnie Winston Matchmaker. Her high-profile clientele includes multi-millionaires and A-list celebrities.

These examples illustrate the importance of specialization, a deep understanding of your chosen market, building client trust, and continuous innovation in service delivery. By focusing on a specific niche, matchmakers can provide more relevant and effective services, leading to better outcomes for their clients.

  • Blind Date Indonesia Hosts Successful Romantic Event for the Sixth Times

    Blind Date Indonesia

    Global Love Report – August 21st, 2024
    English summary by Margaret W

Finding a life partner in today’s fast-paced world is not an easy task. Social circles shrink, and busy work schedules make it harder to meet potential partners. This is where innovative matchmaking services like Blind Date Indonesia come into play.

Despite being less than a year old, Blind Date Indonesia has quickly become a popular organizer that arranges blind date events across various Indonesian cities, including Solo, Jakarta, and most recently, Malang.

Mahathir Al Afghani Al, the founder of Blind Date Indonesia, shared some impressive statistics about their services. Their most popular event in Jakarta attracted a staggering 4,000 registrants, highlighting the demand for such services. To incentivize successful matches, the organizer even offers financial assistance for wedding ceremonies to couples who find their partners through their events.

Recently, the organizer’s sixth event, held at Chatten Cafe in Batu City, Malang, showcased their growing popularity. Within just two weeks of opening registrations, over 200 applicants from the Greater Malang area and surrounding regions submitted their forms. From this applicant pool, 10 people were carefully selected to participate in the live blind date event.

The organizers matched participants according to their respective criteria. The event begins with blindfolded conversations, allowing participants to establish a connection without considering physical appearance. This approach emphasizes personality and compatibility over superficial factors.

Following the initial blindfolded interaction, participants remove their blindfolds and continue their conversations face-to-face. The event then progresses to a dinner session and various group activities, providing multiple opportunities for participants to interact and potentially form meaningful connections.

The organizer caters to a specific demographic, typically attracting participants between 25 and 46 years old. Al noted, “Our participants usually have stable financial and mental readiness. Most are working professionals who can afford the fee to participate in the live blind date event after being selected.” This focus on mature, established individuals increases the likelihood of successful, long-term matches.

    English summary by Margaret W

Matchmaking agencies in France are experiencing a revival as people seek alternatives to dating apps. People are increasingly drawn to matchmaking services for genuine connections, privacy, and a structured approach to finding love. The successes of agencies like Valérie Périnel’s in Rhône-Alpes, Elite Connexion by Guerda de Haan, and Aurélie Lachaud’s Fidelio reflect this resurgence in traditional matchmaking.

    Matchmaking Agency by Valérie Périnel

Valérie Périnel, who runs an agency in Rhône-Alpes, has seen an increase in requests from people who are tired of scams, false profiles, and married people on dating sites. Her agency now has about 300 members between the ages of 28 and 85.

The agency charges €1,420 ($1,550) for a six-month contract and €1,980 ($2,160) for a one-year contract. Discounts of up to 50% are available for clients with lower incomes and those under 30.

Elite Connexion by Guerda de Haan

Similarly, Guerda de Haan founded Elite Connexion, a high-end agency in the Paris suburbs, in 2006. The agency has 300 members and they successfully match two to three couples per month. De Haan’s matchmaking method ensures confidentiality by sharing profiles without photos. She also offers additional services like makeovers and couple therapy to ensure successful matching.

Elite Connexion’s clientele consists of 70% company directors, 20% professionals (such as lawyers and doctors), and 10% senior executives, artists, or showbiz workers. They charge between €3,500 ($3,820) and €11,900 ($13,000), catering primarily to business leaders, professionals, and VIPs. For younger clients, only executives are accepted.

    Fidelio by Aurélie Lachaud

Lastly, Aurélie Lachaud, director of the Fidelio agency in Dijon, emphasizes the need for a thorough first meeting with a potential client, to understand them better and to determine whether they’re ready to move to the next stage. Her agency offers six-month memberships for €990 ($1,080) and one-year memberships for €1,500 ($1,640).

    Global Love Report Interview

Global Love Report (GLR): What made you decide to add relationship coaching to your list of skills?

Jill Vandor (JV): I’ve been a matchmaker since I came out of the womb. Whether it was fixing up my friends in grade school or being a wingwoman before the term even existed, it was a skill that came naturally to me. Through the years of giving relationship and dating advice, reading books, and attending seminars, I developed an enjoyment in coaching friends and clients. The opportunity to learn from Dr. Terri Orbuch, a woman who I have respected from afar for years, came at the perfect time as I’m always looking to better myself.

GLR: How do you think singles will benefit from a matchmaker with coaching skills?

JV: The client who gets to work with a matchmaker with coaching skills is getting the best of all worlds as it provides clients the opportunity to understand wants and needs in a different light. That being said, as a matchmaker who coaches clients, you need to walk the line of meeting your client’s expectations while setting them up for success in a way that is in their best interest.

GLR: What’s something new that you’ve learned that you’re excited to implement in your own business?

JV: I don’t believe I learned anything new that I will be implementing per say, but I found myself both rejuvenated and more clear in the direction of my business.

GLR: What’s something that you learned from the course that surprised you?

JV: Great question… I knew from colleagues how great Dr. Terri was, but was surprised that as great as a mentor as she has been, she’s so giving of her time and even better of a human being.

GLR: What advice do you have for those who want to become a dating and relationship coach?

JV: The best advice I can give somebody who wants to be a dating and relationship coach is to be fully committed to the craft and never to stop trying to better yourself. Whether I’m catching Damona Hoffman or Paul Carrick Brunson on a podcast, quickly takes from Matchmaker Maria (Avgitidis) or Nick Notas on social or simply reading Meredith Goldstein’s Love Letters in the Boston Globe, I always take something away.

GLR: How do you approach working with clients who have different needs and goals when it comes to dating?

JV: I think the most important thing to remember is not to assume anything.  It’s easy to believe you know what they want and need whether it’s in a potential match or coaching, but our job requires us to pay attention as much to what they are not saying and what they are. No matter how comfortable a client is with you when you begin working with them, you will learn so much about what truly makes them tick as time goes by so always give your clients your full attention.

    La Femme de ton chef

    Global Love Report – July 10th, 2024
    English summary by Margaret W

A new dating site, La Femme de ton chef, has been launched in France to connect women with police officers and military personnel. Designed by Clémence Henri, the platform aims to foster sincere and lasting relationships for men in these professions. Unlike traditional dating apps, the site emphasizes security and anonymity, with profiles selected by the founder herself.

Clémence Henri, married to an army officer, was inspired to create the platform after receiving requests from military personnel seeking partners. The platform allows women to contact up to three men per week, with a small fee required to ensure serious inquiries. Man charges 89 Euros (US$95) to submit a profile, while women pay 4.99 Euros (US$5.30) per profile viewed.

Exclusively designed for women, the platform provides them with descriptions of vetted men, without photos. Henri emphasizes that although there are no photos and the process is anonymous, she knows the men she presents, which adds a level of sincerity to the profiles.

Currently, the platform focuses on heterosexual matches because Henri selects the profiles herself and has experience primarily with heterosexual relationships. However, there is potential for expansion in the future. The platform aims to provide a more controlled alternative to mainstream dating apps by offering handpicked profiles to minimize unexpected outcomes. While Henri doesn’t guarantee that every man who submits a profile will find a match, several couples introduced through her platform have gone on to get married.
