  • Innovative Approach to Boosting Birth Rates in South Korea: Financial Incentives and Matchmaking Programs

    Birth Rates in South Korea

    Global Love Report – Jul 3rd, 2024
    Summary by Margaret W

South Korea is tackling its lowest-in-the-world birthrate crisis with innovative measures, as local governments roll out unprecedented initiatives to spur marriages and boost the birthrate. North Gyeongsang Province and Seongnam are leading the charge with inventive matchmaking programs, such as North Gyeongsang’s Solo Village and Seongnam’s Solo Mon’s Choice, which offer workshops and social activities to facilitate connections among singles.

These efforts come amidst a staggering decline in marriages, down 47% in North Gyeongsang alone over the past decade, and a record-low fertility rate now at 0.86 children per woman.

Meanwhile, Busan’s Saha District has taken a bold step by offering financial incentives directly tied to relationship milestones: participants receive 500,000 won (US$375) to begin dating and up to 20 million won (US$15,000) upon marriage, along with additional support like a deposit on a home or 800,000 won (US$600) per month to subsidize their rent for up to five years.

Despite these innovative approaches, critics argue that broader economic challenges such as high living costs and job insecurity remain pivotal factors influencing young adults’ decisions to postpone marriage and parenthood. As South Korea navigates these complex issues, the effectiveness of these initiatives continues to be scrutinized amidst the country’s pressing demographic concerns. Adding to the urgency, South Korea will launch a new ministry of population strategy to tackle the low birth rates and rapidly aging population, which have emerged as some of the country’s most pressing challenges.

  • A Special Interview with Tammy Shaklee

GLR Spotlight is an interview series featuring Matchmakers, Dating Coaches & Relationship Experts

    Global Love Report – June 26, 2024
    Interviewed by Global Love Report

Global Love Spotlight was created to feature some of our industry peers as a way for our community to get to know one another. Learn from what has worked successfully, as well as gain different perspectives and insights into various business strategies. We hope to continuously grow as an industry together by sharing these best practices with everyone!

    Global Love Report Interview

    Tammy Shaklee

We’re thrilled to present an interview with Tammy Shaklee, a leading LGBTQ+ Relationship Expert and President of H4M Matchmaking, one of the top LGBTQ+ matchmaking companies in the US. In this interview, Tammy shares her insights on being a matchmaker who focuses on LGBTQ+ clients, shares memorable success stories, and provides advice for niche matchmakers just starting their businesses.

Global Love Report (GLR): What is the name of your company?

    Tammy Shaklee (TS): H4M Matchmaking

    GLR: What is your niche?

TS: LGBTQ singles coast to coast in the US, ages 20s to 80s, mostly serving gay men and lesbian women, as a niche within a niche. Where we can refer to other LGBTQ+ matchmakers if they are a better fit.

GLR: What is it like as a matchmaker focusing on a specific niche such as LGBTQ+ clients? How does it differ from other matchmakers who don’t focus on a niche?

TS: I feel honored and take seriously the opportunity to match in a community I am not even a member of. As a lifelong straight ally, I wanted gay and lesbian singles to have the same quality experience I had when being matched to my husband of 15 years. The offline matchmaking experience was professional, sophisticated, very private, discreet, and well worth my time with quality introductions of singles I would have never met on my own. I wanted to bring that to the LGBTQ community by being a professional and objective observer.

GLR: What are some of the challenges that you’ve faced as a matchmaker? And how did you overcome it?

TS: Initially, I wondered if gay and lesbian singles would trust a straight ally team to introduce them. I interviewed gay and lesbian singles for more than 5 months, one-on-one, through focus group interviews, to design a company for them, them. By truly engaging in the LGBTQ community through volunteerism, sponsorship, leadership, membership, and leading with love and giving, I felt fully invited and welcomed to provide a service that had not existed for them before at the time. We have been doing this now for 12 years.

GLR: Can you share some of your favorite success stories with us?

TS: While the majority of our clients prefer privacy, we do have some couples who have been thrilled to share their stories. Danny and Willie in California shared their preference to meet a man locally, ideally of a different ethnicity, and a bigger and professional guy like themselves. Their wedding was a wonderful fusion of Danny’s Jewish heritage, and Willie’s Asian and person of color culture. When I attended the InterPride Gala in LA, I was invited to their new dream home to celebrate the introduction that changed their life forever.

We also have lesbian couples who are married after meeting during the pandemic lockdown. Most of our clients agreed to a Zoom introduction for their first date during that time, so those couples first started getting to know each other through a virtual and remote method, as they now enjoy their dream homes in the same city.

GLR: Do you have any advice for niche matchmakers just starting their business?

TS: I absolutely recommend a layered approach to rolling out niche matchmaking services. For example, I focused only on gay men in our home state of Texas to first become successful.

Once that was established, we branched to serve lesbian women. We then branched out of Texas to major cities. We now serve singles in most of the states in the US and have interviewed gay singles in 23 countries, while we only match when they are in the US.

GLR: What approach do you use to understand the evolving dynamics within the LGBTQ+ dating scene?

TS: We learn from our singles. All day, every day, we are engaging with and communicating with thousands of the most eligible singles in the country. While we can read the trends, and engage in the LGBTQ community, we are professionals who learn from actual stories and testimonials of real-life experiences.

After a dozen years, our singles often feel more secure in dating publicly, and even being introduced in all parts of their city, not just the gayborhood of years past. Since the passage of marriage equality, we continue to see growth in the comfort of all things same-sex dating, with truly blind dates, no photos, even for some of our clients who are newly out or coming out of hetero relationships after having done the work.

GLR: Since you specifically focus on LGBTQ+ clients, what are your main concerns about their needs or wants in dating nowadays? What advice would you give to matchmakers who want to specialize in LGBTQ+ matchmaking services to address the community’s specific concerns?

TS: Privacy is a most important component of our business model. We may have singles who are not yet out in their workplace or industry. Or not out with specific family members, or publicly. Each of those details is our responsibility to respect and protect.

Our personalized coaching has helped change lives as well. We are very careful in a small community where a lot of singles may already know or know of each other. Our due diligence to make sure they do not already know each other is imperative. And our protection to make sure we do not out someone is something we protect daily.

  • The Resurgence of Matchmaking Agencies in Europe: An Inside Look at Atoutcoeurs

    Atoutcoeurs

    Global Love Report – May 22nd, 2024
    English summary by Margaret W

The Covid pandemic has rekindled the appeal of these agencies, leading to a significant increase in memberships. The matchmaking industry is evolving, with agencies like Atoutcoeurs in Belgium. On a typical week, Sabine’s tasks consist of:

    • Meeting a new client for tea and having an in-depth conversation about the client’s life and what they hope to find in a partner, followed by crafting a profile for the client’s potential match.
    • She listens to and supports clients beyond matchmaking, guiding them without imposing personal views on love. While she doesn’t give romantic advice as she’s not a psychologist, she does provide guidance on dating. She allows clients to navigate their feelings independently.
    • Discussing the suitability of potential matches with the agency’s founder, Claire Mottart, is crucial to ensuring that the matchmaking process is as effective as possible.
    • Providing support to clients who are seeking companionship, helping them understand that while she can facilitate potential matches, the chemistry between them is something that cannot be controlled.
    • Meeting with clients who are ready to settle down and start a family, encouraging clients to stay positive and open to possibilities.

Atoutcoeurs matchmaking agency offers services for a period ranging from three months to a year until the client finds their ideal match. The cost of these personalized services can range between $1,800 and $7,200, a price that reflects the seriousness of the clients and guarantees their confidentiality.

    Global Love Report Interview

Global Love Report (GLR): What was your career before entering the matchmaking industry?

Elizabeth Tritsch (ET): Before becoming a Matchmaker, I worked in the fashion industry and was the leading Personal Stylist for J.Crew for 13 years. In college, I started my first business, Image and Fashion Consulting. I became a Dating & Relationship Coach in 2018.

GLR: Why did you decide to become a matchmaker?

ET: As a dating coach, I prepared my clients to succeed at dating and it was a natural progression to become a Matchmaker and match them up. I made my first match at the age of 19 by introducing my college best friend to the man she’s been married to for 26 years.

GLR: What are some of the things that make being a matchmaker worthwhile in your opinion?

ET: Hearing the happy stories of first dates that turn into happy, loving relationships, and getting wedding announcements is the best part – it’s why I do what I do.

GLR: What are some of the challenges that you’ve had to face? And how did you handle them?

ET: The biggest challenge is with those who have a laundry list of exterior qualities, those looking for a Prom Date instead of a LTR. I let them begin with their list and ask them how’s that been going and they’re quick to say, “Not so good.”

I help them dive deep into their long-term goals and help them see that focusing on superficial qualities only won’t get them what they want. They get to keep two deal breakers of what they want and learn that focusing on core values, similar beliefs, and the same goals will get them exactly what they want – Love. And they usually attract amazing partners easily and maintain a happy, connected relationship.

GLR: What makes you different from others in the industry?

ET: I 100% care about my clients’ happiness and use the Laws of Attraction, visualization, and manifesting to get them their ideal partner.

GLR: What do you think is your biggest strength as a Matchmaker?

ET: My biggest strength is ongoing self-development. I enroll in classes and programs and hire coaches to discover new ways to help them face dating resistance and feel that they deserve love. By helping their future pace and change their mindset, they’re able to see the overabundance of wonderful partners out there searching for them and meet them quickly and easily.

GLR: Have you collaborated with other matchmakers? How has that experience been?

ET: I’ve collaborated with other matchmakers through coaching their clients, podcasts, and interviews, helping new matchmakers see their value in what they offer, and helping them with sales calls. It’s great to help new matchmakers and see them grow into the role. I’m looking forward to collaborating with matches and doing singles events together.

GLR: Do you have any words of advice for those who are new in the industry?

ET: Know your WHY – why you do what you do, don’t be afraid to ask for help, guidance, etc, and believe in yourself. There’s no way we can match everyone, we need you and we need that special sauce that only you have. Don’t be afraid to promote yourself and charge your worth. Your knowledge, education, and time are worth a lot more than you realize.

    Global Love Report Interview

Global Love Report (GLR): What made you decide to become a dating and relationship coach?

Mila Smith (MS): After 20+ years in the corporate business world, I decided to turn to something I am passionate about helping women and men find the love they deserve as a Dating & Relationship Coach.

Why? Seven years ago, I was a single mum with a questionable relationship track record – I used to think I was unlucky until I worked out it had nothing to do with luck and everything to do with my choices, which is when I started educating myself…

Meanwhile, my now husband was halfway through a difficult divorce, while dipping his toes in the treacherous waters of dating, asking himself the same question: “What am I doing wrong?”…

We were no exception: there is a huge requirement for support in the UK as many people are lacking awareness, struggling to find suitable partners, and building lasting loving relationships. Initially, my husband and I together created an online dating advice program offering both male and female perspectives; and subsequently, I took the science-based coaching course to expand my knowledge.

GLR: How do you think singles will benefit from a matchmaker with coaching skills?

MS: I do not offer matchmaking services; however, the benefits of dating/relationship coaching are immeasurable and will help singles avoid costly mistakes, focus on identifying their needs, choose wisely, and, finally, build a lasting loving relationship.

We go on personal development and parenting courses, pay career coaches to ensure success, etc. Dating often isn’t taken quite as seriously, but just think how important choosing a potential partner is. Without a doubt, it’s one of the life-changing decisions, that impacts our future, as well as the future of our children.

GLR: What’s something new that you’ve learned that you’re excited to implement in your own business?

MS: I love various client questionnaires and exercises provided by Dr. Terri Orbuch. I am particularly impressed by the 21-day action plan which helps clients adopt new habits or lose some bad ones. Great to know anyone can change when they set achievable gradual goals – I am definitely putting this into practice.

GLR: What’s something that you learned from the course that surprised you?

MS: It was probably having this myth debunked: “The best relationships are ones with no conflict/disagreements”. To my surprise, turns out such relationships are the ones likely to fail!

Personally, I hate conflict, however, I now realize that a debate or even a disagreement, as long as it remains polite and respectful, is normal and healthy in any relationship.

GLR: What advice do you have for those who want to become a dating and relationship coach?

MS: If you have the empathy and the patience – go for it! You can make a significant difference to someone’s love life and help them find happiness.

There is an added bonus: no matter where you are on your personal journey, you can use all the tips and knowledge in your own relationship(s)!

GLR: How do you approach working with clients who have different needs and goals when it comes to dating?

MS: I have learned one important thing from Dr. Terri Orbuch: we try to avoid “should” statements or tell clients what to do. It is not easy as there is always a temptation to break into a lecture.

However, our job as a coach is to line up the facts in front of a client encouraging them to identify their needs, goals, and any discrepancies. Thus, leading to better decisions and outcomes.

  • A Look at the Personal Touch of Marriage Agencies: Beyond the Realm of Dating Apps

    marriage agencies

    Global Love Report – April 17th, 2024
    English summary by Margaret W

Singles are increasingly becoming disillusioned with impersonal dating apps like Tinder and online dating sites. Instead, they are gravitating toward matchmaking agencies, hoping for a more personalized way to find their ideal partner.

A2 Rencontres is the oldest matchmaking agency in Belgium. Their sought-after “Success” package carries an annual price tag of 2,500 euros. Despite the steep cost, director Marie de Duve argues that the expense is warranted, considering their advertising reach and social media presence. For this fee, clients are afforded a personalized service. Marie de Duve takes into account each client’s hobbies, and socio-cultural background to facilitate potentially successful matches.

In Belgium, matchmaking agencies operate under a legally defined standard contract. They commit to arranging a specific number of meetings within a certain timeframe. However, this is an obligation of effort, not outcome. Marie de Duve explains that they can’t guarantee to find the perfect match or predict the outcome, emphasizing the unpredictability of love.

    Global Love Report Interview

Global Love Report (GLR): What was your career before entering the matchmaking industry?

Julie Ferman (JF): I was a hotel industry executive, a National Sales Manager for the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company.

GLR: Why did you decide to become a matchmaker?

JF: I was a very proactive dater – super sincere in my desire to be married and to have a family together. I stumbled into the Great Expectations Video Dating Service in my hometown, St. Louis.

The guy who signed me up was Gil Ferman. I asked him out two weeks later. We were quickly engaged, married, and pregnant. Solving this problem for others has always seemed to me like a natural payback.

GLR: What are some of the things that make being a matchmaker worthwhile in your opinion?

JF: I love having the chance to enrich the lives of the people we get to work with. I’ve built a company that enables me to serve people at all levels, from Free to VIP.

We get to take away a lot of the “yuk” of dating for our clients, and we’re able to bring more of the GOOD stuff to our clients. It’s been enormously gratifying and fulfilling to me, every day since 1990.

GLR: What are some of the challenges that you’ve had to face and how did you handle them?

JF: Managing expectations is always a challenge. My solution is to make my “deliverables” crystal clear, and accessible right on my website’s services page.

No smoke, no mirrors. I state what I can provide/promise and what I can’t. Building out a full menu of client services has been a beautiful business model. Because the focus is on service, not sales, clients trust me and consider my community to be the oasis in the dating desert.

GLR: Could you share with us some stories about your life as a matchmaker? For example, an achievement/award, your most memorable client, etc.

JF: Four-time winner of iDate’s Best Matchmaker award. NAWBO’s Trailblazer of the Year. The beautiful lavender butterfly that sits on my desk, given to me on the occasion of my Client, Maggy’s wedding – means more than any award could ever mean.

GLR: Do you have any words of advice for people who are new in the industry?

JF: The person who’s considering hiring you, to be their matchmaker – each time, ask yourself, “If this were my sister, if this were my brother, would I encourage them to make this investment with this particular matchmaker?

Would I say it’s a smart investment? If not, then don’t sign this client on for matchmaking. Find another way to serve that’s a better investment of their psychic energy and hard-earned dollars.

GLR: Could you share some of your “best practices” tips for the people who are just starting out in the industry?

JF: Strive to get profiles complete at the very first touch. Don’t wait til someone’s invested in high-level matchmaking to take the time to write up a great profile. Do that on the very first phone call. If you’re not doing the intake, hire people who can do a really good job building out the profile WHILE you’re vetting, on the very first phone call.

Take the time to polish up every profile you touch – so that when you want to match that person with a client later, you don’t have to chase them down to get a full, complete, beautiful profile. Build it every time you’re touching that client. Service first. It builds confidence, trust, loyalty, and better matches.

Speed Dating Experience for Ages 60-72 in the Netherlands

    Global Love Report – April 3rd, 2024
    English summary by Margaret W

Maan van de Sande and Riek Lavrijsen, a couple who found love at a speed dating event, are now intent on helping others experience the same joy. Their goal is to facilitate the creation of meaningful connections by hosting ‘Experience Speed Dating’ events in Reusel, the Netherlands.

These Speed Dating Experiences for Ages 60-72 in the Netherlands are scheduled for April 8 and 15. However, the execution of these events hinges on sufficient interest, particularly from male participants.

Despite their late-in-life romance, the couple maintains their independence, seeing each other about six times a week. They believe that in-person meetings hold a distinct advantage over online dating, leading to more genuine and successful connections.

They’re also open to extending this opportunity beyond their local community. The organizers hope to draw in participants from Belgium, reinforcing their belief that “love doesn’t stop at the border.” Through their efforts, Maan and Riek hope to inspire and facilitate love stories similar to theirs, underscoring the power of personal, face-to-face interactions in the age of digital dating.

    Global Love Report Interview

Global Love Report (GLR): What made you decide to become a dating and relationship coach?

Matthew Ramieri (MR): Initially, I decided to become a relationship coach to assist with the matchmaking process for MettaFind, Inc.

However, once I delved into the certification program, I felt that this was something that really resonated with me and something that I am quite good at. I decided to make it a stand-alone offering because I want to be able to help as many people as possible find deep and meaningful connections.

GLR: How do you think singles will benefit from a matchmaker with coaching skills?

MR: Many people may not have a clear understanding of their desires or requirements in a partner. A skilled coach possesses the ability to gently uncover the genuine needs and desires that individuals may not be consciously aware of in their quest for a meaningful connection.

GLR: What’s something new that you’ve learned that you’re excited to implement in your own business?

MR: The part of the process that involves helping individuals understand themselves better, fostering personal development, and enhancing overall well-being.

GLR: What’s something that you learned from the course that surprised you?

MR: Not as surprising to me as someone who has been interested in analyzing relationships and what makes for a good connection, but something that I think might be surprising to many is the emphasis on fostering independence within relationships.

While the term “relationship coach” might suggest a focus on collaboration and togetherness, coaches often work to empower individuals to stand strong as individuals within their partnerships. Coaches guide clients to maintain a sense of self-identity, pursue personal goals, and prioritize individual well-being, recognizing that a healthy relationship involves two whole individuals coming together rather than relying on each other for completeness.

This approach challenges the notion that dependency is a foundation for strong relationships and encourages interdependence—a balance where both partners maintain autonomy while supporting each other’s growth.  This focus on fostering independence can be surprising to those expecting relationship coaching to solely address issues within the context of the couple, highlighting the importance of individual strength in creating resilient partnerships.

GLR: Who do you aspire to be as a coach (e.g. Matthew Hussey, James Preece, etc.)? And why?

MR: I do not aspire to be like any particular coach. I just strive to be a compassionate and empathetic listener and create a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to express themselves openly.
