  • The Skills and Attitudes of a Good Matchmaker

    Matchmaker

    Global Love Report – June 22, 2022
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

In an interview with ¡Hola! Magazine, Verónica Alcanda, the CEO of Alcanda Matchmaking in Spain, recently revealed what she believes are the skills and qualities of a good matchmaker.

She believes that a matchmaker should know how to analyze a client’s needs. They need to know what the client’s in a potential partner are. Additionally, they should be able to see any hidden fears or issues that clients may have and how to help them.

A good matchmaker should also know how to select the best possible match for their client. So they should have interview guidelines that they follow. This is to ensure they keep to the same standards. And to keep to that standard even when the matchmakers who conduct the interview are different people.

Alcanda reveals that a good matchmaker needs a lot of skills, such as communication skills, problem-solving abilities, empathy, and so forth. But the most important one is emotional intelligence because this is the keystone on which the other skills will build upon.

Other skills matchmakers should have to include:

    • Be aware of their obligation towards their clients and potential clients
    • Communicate their commitments to their clients and potential clients
    • Ensure the professionalism of their service and being thorough
    • Have guidelines in place to be less biased and to have quality standards

In terms of attitude, Alcanda says a good matchmaker should:

    • Truly believe that they can help clients find someone to have a long-term relationship with.
    • Have empathy: able to put themselves in other people’s shoes and understand their wants and fears.
    • Be willing to learn from their experience with each client from the beginning to the end.
    • Be able to make people feel comfortable to encourage them to communicate.
    • Have the ability to listen.

  • HyggePartner helps Men with Thinning Hair

    HyggePartner

    Global Love Report – June 8, 2022
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

HyggePartner is a new company in Japan that specializes in coaching and matchmaking for a very unique niche—men with thinning hair! Though, admittedly, the agency does offer a variety of services and caters not only to men. But their main target audience are men with thinning hair.

The company is based in Yokohama and was founded by Yukiko Ishida, a former beautician who has 10 years of experience with scalp counseling, and has since decided to switch industries. She runs the agency with her husband, Makoto Ishida.

As to why she decided to enter the matchmaking industry, Yukiko Ishida explained that men with this kind of problem may feel anxious. They may not have the confidence to find a spouse and are worried about their looks. And that’s where HyggePartner can help them.

The agency provides cosmetic consultation in terms of hairstyle that matches with the client and that a client is comfortable with. They also help clients with taking photographs for dating or matchmaking profiles, and creating the profiles themselves. They also provide coaching because Ishida is a certified coach from the Ginza Coaching School.

Because the agency provides a personalized service, they only work with 25 clients at a time. This way, they can focus on the client and guide them to the end goal: marriage.

  • Duo’s two-part matching system

    two-part matching system

    Global Love Report – May 31, 2022
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

Duo recently revealed how it matches: with a two-part matching system that has both a “scientific” data-based system coupled with “emotional” matching by matchmakers.

When a person registers, they fill in a form with their information. And they also specify type of partner that they’re looking for. Having completed that, they will then have a consultation with a professional matchmaker.

The next step is to have their documents are certified and their authenticity checked by DUO’s internal team. After this is done, their registration is approved.

DUO will then compare their information to its 36,000 members using its own matching system DMS (Duo Matching System) in order to find them the best partner.

The second matching system occurs during this process. This time by matchmakers who have an average experience of more than 10 years. They will look at the member’s needs and other information that can’t be confirmed through data alone. And by doing so, the accuracy and level of satisfaction from the matches will increase.

This “precise and delicate matching” is at the core of DUO, according to someone who works for the company. With the systematic and complex two-part matching system along with the company’s almost 3 decades long experience, customer’s satisfaction rate will increase even more.

  • Annemieke Dubois: The Call of Matchmaking

    annemieke dubois

    Global Love Report – May 31, 2022
    Excerpt translated by Pamela Stephanie

Matchmaker Annemieke Dubois, owner of the high-end dating agency Jade & Jules, talks about her matchmaking business.

    What are your assets?

At the top is Nina, my 14-year-old daughter. Next is my company. Entrepreneurship is in the genes. I like to start from a blank page. I am also a people person. Of course, I don’t own the people around me but they are a tremendous resource, including my clients. I build relationships from freedom to connection. Authenticity and real emotions are worth more than material things. Couple that with travel experiences and you get a nice capital.

    Do you invest in others?

Yes. I’ve been single for four years but I’m a big giver. […] I give my heart and soul to my customers. Matchmaking can’t just be done rationally. It’s a matter of unconditional commitment.

    What was your quantum leap?

Becoming self-employed in 2010. Suddenly I didn’t have the certainty of a wage and I had to think outside the box. But it gave me wings. In 2012 I started my first franchise of the matchmaking agency Berkeley International, where I searched for a long-term partner for high-end clients. That was also a big leap.

Have you ever experienced a personal bankruptcy?

After selling my business in 2017 I went through an identity crisis. The successful deal stroked my ego but the day after things went quiet. No more emails, no more WhatsApp messages from clients. The sale had been my choice but what was the reason again? Without realizing it, I had linked my identity to my business. And suddenly I felt myself changing. Who was I really? What did I want? I went through a grieving process, and carried it through to my marriage.

I still feel a lot of respect and friendship for my ex-husband. That’s worth more to me than the money. Financially, the divorce was not a good move: I had proudly given the capital of the [sale] to my family and less than a year later it was divided into two. I had to start from scratch again. After the sale of Berkeley, I was not allowed to work in a competitive position for three years. I returned to [the pharmaceutical industry] but the call of matchmaking was too strong. In 2020 I founded Jade & Jules.

  • Single 20-somethings Turned to Matchmaking

    Global Love Report – May 25, 2022
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

One of the largest matchmaking companies in Japan, IBJ, revealed their membership growth rate for last year.

The results showed membership growth for all of its age groups, but this is especially so for the 20-somethings age group. In comparison to 2018, the number of members in their 20s have increased by 50% last year, with 161% for males and 151% for females. The percentage of increase for both groups is 153%, this is especially so in rural areas.

Some of the reasons why there’s a significant increase in members in their 20s include:

    • Less opportunities for young people to meet because of Covid-19. So there are fewer dating events such as drinking parties and blind dates.
    • Dating app users who are seriously looking for a spouse are considering matchmaking agencies
    • There’s more flexibility with regards to dating activities because of virtual options, so it’s now possible to make time for such during free time or when they’re at home.

Another trend is that there were more registrations from people living in rural areas. Especially in Tohoku, Koshinetsu, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa.

Some of the reasons why for this include: a decrease in the number of dates that can occur in rural areas due to people moving to the cities and average marriage age in rural areas tend to be lower than in urban areas.
