  • The Dutch Love Brokers

    Global Love Report – June 14, 2023
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

Cristel Leeuwenhaag and Marieke Slingenberg are “De Liefdesmakelaars” or the Love Brokers. They previously worked in social services prior to starting their business.

According to Slingenberg, she had been considering the idea of a matchmaking agency for some time. She often spoke to clients who were lonely and regularly thought that they were too nice to be single. She even found that some clients can be a good match with each other. Unfortunately, as a social worker, she couldn’t do anything.

Leeuwenhaag worked in the same organization as Slingenberg. During one of their talks, they spoke of love and relationships. The duo then started to think more seriously about a matchmaking agency before they eventually decided to go for it. They put their ideas together and created the concept for their “De Liefdesmakelaars” matchmaking agency.

They work with clients who are set in life—house, job, and social life—but lack a partner. Their agency provides coaching as well as matchmaking. And add a personal touch to their method.

This personal touch includes sharing their relationship experiences with their clients. After all, clients need to be open about their dating and relationship history. According to Slingenberg, “If they make themselves vulnerable, we should do that too, I think.”

Both Leeuwenhaag and Slingenberg can understand the importance of improving oneself and having the courage to take action. Because without the need to improve and the courage to take action, they never would have started their matchmaking agency and become “Love Brokers”.

  • Dating Apps Help Encourage Singles Be More Unconventional

    Global Love Report – June 7, 2023
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

People in their 30s tend to look for stability. They would either start a family—the average age to give birth to a first child is 31, according to the Spanish National Institute of Statistics—or purchase a house.

And that may be why Spanish singles in their 30s turn to matchmakers for help. Alicia López, a psychologist and Director of the Spanish matchmaking agency Lazos, explains that singles of this age group want to start a family or become parents and want someone to share a life with.

However, accomplishing these things can be difficult.

López explains that society today is dominated by social media. And on dating platforms, you’re judged by your picture and won’t be given an opportunity.

But despite this, López reveals that the company is grateful to dating apps because she believes that they encourage singles to find a partner in “unconventional ways,” thereby opening their eyes to other possibilities, such as using a matchmaking agency.

So, people would come to her agency without feeling embarrassed or having difficulties, which was different from the past. They also come with a lot of enthusiasm and high expectations—which the agency lowers to a more reasonable level.

  • Report: More Matchmaking Agencies in Korea Since COVID

    more matchmaking agencies in Korea

    Global Love Report – May 17, 2023
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

According to South Korea’s National Tax Service, currently, there are more matchmaking agencies in Korea today than before the pandemic.

The number of matchmaking agencies in Korea in February 2023 was 1,841. This is a 17% increase compared to 2019. However, before 2019, the number of matchmaking agencies was decreasing.

    There were 1,613 agencies in February 2017, 1,609 in 2018, and 1572 in 2019.

But since COVID, that number has increased, with 1,684 in 2021 and 1,723 in 2022.

However, the number of actual marriages has declined; the total number of marriages in South Korea was below 200,000 for 2022 and 2023.

This has to do with the decline in the importance of marriage among young people, specifically those in their 20s and 30s. The report showed that less than 50% of those in their 20s (40.6%) and their 30s (42.3%) believe they should get married.

  • More French Singles Use Agencies But A Change is Needed

    French singles use agencies

    Global Love Report – May 17, 2023
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

French singles are choosing to use a matchmaking agency to find a partner. These singles–who are 32 to 37 years old–chose “traditional” matchmaking agencies for different reasons. This is even though 22% of new couples that started dating in the last 12 months have stated that they met through an online dating app or website.

One of the reasons why French singles are choosing matchmaking agencies is because they’ve had no luck on online dating platforms. One of these singles is a 32-year-old salesman who describes himself as shy and reserved. He decided to register with one of Unicis’ agencies and has successfully found a relationship.

Another reason is for convenience’s sake. He explains that he uses Uber to get around, has a cleaner to clean his home, and uses a travel agency to book his vacation. So, it makes sense for him to use a matchmaking agency to find a partner.

However, despite this, the image of matchmaking agencies and those who choose to use matchmaking agencies need to change.

Some successful clients have been reluctant to share that they’ve used the services of a matchmaking agency. Mathilde* met her partner Thomas* through an agency. And the couple is currently expecting a baby. But when asked how they met, they would reply that they met through a mutual friend. Only close friends are aware of the truth.

Another issue is that agencies are seen as something used by older people persists. Matthieu, a 37-year-old client of the matchmaking agency “Begin,” said he thought that matchmaking agencies were for older people and those who can’t use the internet. He also revealed that he was initially afraid that he would be matched with a 60-year-old woman.

And while he’s not embarrassed to disclose that he’s using a matchmaking agency, but some may see the fact that he’s paying someone to help him find a partner can be seen as a weakness. He said his friends laughed at him when he revealed this fact, but after, some came to him privately to ask for details.

    Global Love Report – May 10, 2023
    Interviewed by Global Love Report

GLR Spotlight was created to feature some of our industry peers as a way for our community to get to know one another – Learn from what has worked successfully, as well as gain different perspectives and insights into various business strategies. We hope to continuously grow as an industry together by sharing these best practices with everyone!

    About Joan Paiement

    Joan Paiement

Joan Paiement is a Matchmaker, Life Coach, Business Coach, and Relationship Coach, as well as the President of Intermezzo Montreal.

Intermezzo Montreal was founded in 1996 and has the largest network of single professionals in Quebec.

Global Love Report (GLR): Hi Joan, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions! Could you tell us a bit about your career before you entered the matchmaking industry?

Joan Paiement (JP): I was Chief Financial Officer and General Manager of the Montreal Stock Exchange. I worked there for 20 years and when I retired, I was convinced that I would never work again as nothing could be more exciting than the Stock Exchange. I retired to become a full-time mom.

GLR: Why did you decide to become a matchmaker?

JP: I had stopped working and went out to dinner with a friend of mine who was recently separated. She wanted to meet someone new and was asking me if I had any solutions. At that time I didn’t.

The next morning she sent me a link to Intermezzo.ca. It was a dating agency. I looked it up and I saw that they were hiring; I said to myself, “I have free time so I’ll apply, go in, and find her a boyfriend!” I said to myself that I would quit afterwards.

    But I did not quit.

I loved being a matchmaker. I eventually bought the company. It’s been 12 years and I love every single day at the office.

GLR: What are some of the things that make being a matchmaker worthwhile in your opinion?

JP: Of course, the biggest reward is when we form happy couples. When they send us baby pictures, it’s pure pleasure and the sense of a job well done.

GLR: What are some of the challenges that you’ve had to face and how did you handle them?

JP: As much as we love our clients, they are the source of many challenges. Some are difficult, some overrate themselves, some don’t behave properly and the list goes on.

We have to handle them with care, build their trust and then try to coach them in the right direction.

GLR: What makes you different from others in the industry?

JP: Being in Montreal, we have to deal with 2 different clienteles. The Anglos and the Francos.

They don’t have much in common, so it’s important for us to be well versed in the customs and expectations of every one. We are a group of 7 in one office which makes us the most important agency in the Province of Quebec.

Interestingly, many Americans like Montreal women and their flair for fashion; they become our customers and we’ve happily matched many of them.

GLR: What do you think is your biggest strength as a Matchmaker?

JP: The love of my job and the experience that I had at the Stock Exchange. I’m tough when I have to be and I’m a problem solver.

GLR: Have you collaborated with other matchmakers?

JP: We’ve collaborated with many matchmakers but only in one way. We have never asked for help (because we have a big database) but we are approached for help quite often. It’s always a pleasure for us to collaborate, and it’s an advantage for our clients.

GLR: Lastly, do you have any words of advice for people who are new in the industry?

JP: Stay calm and carry on. Nothing is easy, you have to work for it.

GLR: Thank you so much, Joan!

  • Background Checks on Clients

    background checks on clients

    Global Love Report – April 18, 2023
    Written by Pamela Stephanie

Online dating has a security issue. And we’re not talking about hacked accounts or data sold to third parties, either. Most online dating platforms don’t screen their users. So just about anyone can create an account without verifying their ID.

It has become such an issue that online dating platforms have started to offer background checks. Match, for example, has partnered with Garbo, an online background check platform. Even Tinder users will soon be able to access criminal background checks on whoever they match with.

Background Checks in the Offline Dating Industry

But what about the offline dating industry? Do matchmakers run background checks on clients?

According to our 2021 Industry Survey, around 74% of matchmakers and dating coaches conduct a background checks on their clients.

Around 61% of respondents conduct background checks for all clients. However, 13% only do so for paid clients.

19% of matchmakers and coaches believe that it depends on the situation.

And only around 3% of respondents have said they don’t run background checks on clients at all.

Which Platforms Do Matchmakers and Coaches Use to Conduct Background Checks on Clients?

    • Spokeo
    • Instant Checkmate
    • Intelius
    • Truthfinder
    • BeenVerified
    • Google

Spokeo, Instant Checkmate, Intelius, Truthfinder, and BeenVerified are platforms where you can search for information regarding a person using their name, address, phone number, or email.

For example, Spokeo looks through public records to find the information and can show a person’s marital status, property ownership, and social profiles. You can also look up their criminal records—if any—but additional fees may apply.

But you can also use Google to search through public records and find social profiles.

However, these platforms are only available for matchmakers and coaches based in the United States. For those based overseas, you will have to rely on platforms that conduct international background checks. And unlike the platforms mentioned above, the international ones are not free. The estimated cost for an international background check can range from $32 to $300.

You can also learn more about the top background check platforms, what they do, and their advantages and disadvantages.

  • Young French Singles Choosing Matchmaking Agencies

Young French singles are choosing matchmaking agencies

    Global Love Report – April 12, 2023
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

Young French singles are choosing matchmaking agencies to find a partner. And why is that?

According to the Founder of Elite Connexion agency, Guerda de Haan, it’s because they feel that agencies are more private and more secure. Furthermore, agencies provide them with support, making them feel more protected. De Haan also noted that 50% of her clients are young singles around their late 20s and early 30s.

One of her success stories, a 26-year-old woman who is about to marry, said that she opted to use an agency because she felt they were more precise. And she was sure that she would be able to find someone that met her expectations.

But that may not be all. According to author and journalist Flore Cherry—an expert on sexuality—young French singles are craving commitment. And there are two reasons for this: they’ve seen their parents quickly go through divorce and wish to see commitment again.

And then there’s also the post-lockdown aspect. During lockdowns, they found themselves alone in their home, and their mental health suffered.

So young French singles are choosing matchmaking agencies because they want something more natural. Not something digital. An agency brings back that element of reality in dating.

Additionally, dating apps can be frustrating. For women, there are many choices. However, men tend to have difficulty finding a first date.

    About Recel Tayor

    Recel Taylor

Recel Tayor is the Managing Director of Vital Partners, a matchmaking agency based in Australia. She has helped coach singles for over a decade to help them find a long-term partner.

Vital Partners was established in 1986 and has served over 30,000 singles. The company has offices in Sydney and Canberra.

Global Love Report (GLR): Hello Recel! Could you tell us about your career prior to becoming a dating and relationship coach?

Recel Tayor (RT): I worked as a business sales consultant in London, specialising in Telephony and VPN solutions.

GLR: What made you decide to renew your coaching certification?

RT: In our industry, it’s important for our clients and especially those looking at working with an agency, to feel they can trust a company/agency to do the right thing for them. With so many horror stories online, having a coaching certification embeds peace of mind and trust. Also, as a business, it’s nice to feel you’re part of a community.

I first worked in the matchmaking Industry in 1999, then a year later left to travel Europe. After three years in Europe, I came back home to Australia. Shortly after, I returned to the agency, managing their office in Adelaide. A year later became General Manager for three offices. I trained mainly consultants on the business. When my ex-boss wanted to retire, I took over the company in 2011. In 2017 I met Jamie Lee from Singapore, who introduced me to the Matchmaking institute. As a business owner, I see the value of the coaching certification as essential credibility.

GLR: What types of services are offered by your agency?

RT: We introduce genuine single men and women to their life partners. We offer guidance and basic coaching as part of their membership.

GLR: Could you tell us a little bit about which areas/locations you cover and about your client base?

RT: We work all over New South Wales (NSW) and Australian Capital Territory (ACT). We work with women and men from all walks of life.

GLR: What is your favorite memory of a successful coaching client? Do you have any success stories that you wish to share with us?

RT: A client had been seeing a psychologist for several years, costing him $200 each session. He had cost him thousands over the years. Coming to see us was the best decision he ever made. Not only did he meet his wife, but he also wasn’t charged every time he phoned to talk to us about how to deal with rejection.

GLR: What are the lessons you have learned since you first started coaching singles vs. now?

RT: I’ve learned that you really need to listen to people’s needs. It is in their frustrations that you find their need; thus, listen to their frustrations. Coaching has stayed the same but evolved to listening more and asking intelligent questions.

GLR: What are your suggestions to people who are thinking of becoming a dating and relationship coach but are hesitant to start?

RT: They must ask themselves why they want to be dating and relationship coaches and what qualities they think they’d need to be a good coach. For example, are they coachable themselves? Trainable? To become a coach, you must be tolerant, patient and compassionate. People are not easy to work with, especially when they have values that don’t align with their goals and desires. You will be working with people’s mindsets; to do that, you have to be in the right frame of mind. Otherwise, people can trigger you.

GLR: Thank you for answering our questions, Recel!
