GLR Spotlight is an interview series featuring Matchmakers, Dating Coaches & Relationship Experts

    Global Love Report – August 24, 2022
    Interviewed by Global Love Report

GLR Spotlight was created to feature some of our industry peers as a way for our community to get to know one another – Learn from what has worked successfully, as well as gain different perspectives and insights into various business strategies. We hope to continuously grow as an industry together by sharing these best practices with everyone!

    About Violet Lim

    Violet Lim

Violet Lim is the CEO and Co-Founder of Lunch Actually Group, Asia’s biggest lunch dating company, with offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
She founded the company back in 2004 with then fiancé, Jamie Lee. Now, the company has successfully arranged more than 150,000 dates and brought together more than 4,000 successful and married couples.

Violet is the first Asian to be certified by the Matchmaking Institute in New York City, and today, she is an acknowledged expert in her field. She has appeared in over 4,500 media coverages. She is a sought-after speaker and has spoken in many conferences, including TEDxNTU in Singapore, Asian Women in Leadership Summit, Global Dating Insights Summit in New York and more.

GLR: Hello Violet, what was your career before entering the matchmaking industry?

Violet Lim (VL): My first job was with Citigroup Singapore as a Management Associate, and that was where I first got the inspiration of starting a dating agency, as I had so many single colleagues!

GLR: Why did you decide to become a matchmaker?

VL: As a MA at Citigroup Singapore, I get to work in many different departments and meet many people. I observed that many of my colleagues were single and not dating. That was rather puzzling for me as they were attractive and eligible people. I soon realized that it is because they were working really long hours, they were virtually married to the bank.

When I came across the concept of lunch dating, I was immediately attracted to the idea because I felt that lunch was ‘short, sweet and simple’ – it is long enough for you to get to know someone, yet it was not too long that it would become awkward. Having always been passionate about helping people, I decided to quit my job at the bank and start a new career as a modern-day matchmaker.

GLR: What are some of the things that make being a matchmaker worthwhile in your opinion?

VL: I started Lunch Actually, because it’s a business that helps singles find love and happiness. For me, being a matchmaker is worthwhile because the business is not just about making money, but helping to make a difference in people’s lives by helping them find their life-long happiness. The business is also very unique since it not only impacts one person’s life but also generations to come.

GLR: What are some of the challenges that you’ve had to face and how did you handle them?

VL: I think the most recent one I can share was how we quickly had to transform due to the pandemic.

In the past 18 years, we always conduct 1-1 consultation with our potential clients and coaching sessions with our clients in our office. We also arrange the dates for them in restaurants/cafes that they prefer. However, when the pandemic began to hit the countries where we operate, various regulations for social distancing were enforced and followed by the closure of offices and restaurants, and therefore, we had to transform the way we serve our clients and moved our services to virtual.

Due to these measures that were imposed, it has forced us to pivot as a company. It has always been my personal belief that even in the darkest of times, there are always silver linings. During these times, we successfully moved all our services to virtual. Our team is working from home, serving our singles virtually through virtual consultations, coaching and arranging virtual dates and virtual speed dating events. We also managed to launch our series of monthly webinars where we brought in different speakers (external and internal) to share about various self-improvements and dating topics with more than 700 participants!

The response of virtual dates has been positive, and more singles are definitely getting more open and receptive towards the idea. In fact, because most of us are staying home, singles actually have more time to invest in their personal development, whether it’s to trying new recipes, exercising more, learning new skills, and in dating, also meeting more people through virtual dates. It’s a new and fun experience for them, and at the same time, they’re still making progress in their love life to achieve their goals.

In our 2020 Annual Singles Dating Survey, over half of singles agreed that virtual dating is a good alternative and they believe it’s going to be the future of dating!

GLR: Could you share with us some stories about your life as a matchmaker?

VL: One of the most memorable matches for me is our first couple who got engaged.

Chris is a lawyer. When we first matched her up with Ben, she was furious. She didn’t understand why we would have matched her up with Ben who is an entertainer (juggling, unicycling etc.) As we have met up with both of them, we realized that they are very compatible, have many similar values as well as share a similar sense of humor.

Furthermore, Ben is actually very well-educated, having a Masters from Oxford. After much persuasion from our dating consultants, Chris reluctantly went on the date. In their own words, they got on like house and fire, and they got engaged within 3 months, and married within 1 year. They now are proud parents to two beautiful daughters.

We are very proud of this match as both of them would probably not have crossed paths if they had not met at Lunch Actually. And to cynics out there who might say that dating services take the romance out of dating… Ben said, “Love is love, no matter if you have met at a bus stop, a bar or a dating service!” 🙂

GLR: That’s truly a great successful couple story! Thank you for sharing that with us! Do you have any words of advice for people who are new in the industry?

VL: If your sole objective is to make money, I will suggest that you try out other industries as there are many other ways (and sometimes easier ways) to make money.

If you are joining the dating industry, you need to have a burning passion to help singles find love, as there will be times when you wonder why you are here especially after being screamed at by an upset client. At the same time, this is probably one of if not the most rewarding professions you can have – not just changing one person’s life but transforming generations to come.

While you are starting out, remember to not just work in the business (i.e. the day to day operations) but also on the business (the strategy and the business development). Take time to learn, surround yourself with like-minded matchmakers like the community that we have built here at Global Love Institute (GLI). Investing in the matchmaking certification from the then Matchmaking Institute (now GLI) is one of the best business decisions I made.

GLR: And lastly, could you share some of your “best practices” tips for the people who are just starting out in the industry?

VL: I would encourage those who just started the industry to open up and share with one another. The number one thing business leaders need to know is: don’t be too shy to ask.

A lot of people, when they go into business, would feel like they need to do everything on their own. But the truth is that, there are a lot of people who have walked the same paths and gone through the same trials and errors, and if you would just ask for advice, help, or guidance, you’d be surprised that a lot of them are actually more than willing to share their experiences.

So, you don’t have to go through what they have gone through and make the mistakes they have made.

GLR: Thank you for your time, Violet!

  • “Dating on Water”: New Dating Concept

    dating on water

    Global Love Report – August 16, 2022
    English translation by Pamela Stephanie

Between 23rd and 31st of August, adventurer Christophe Sepot and an experienced host will take you on a cruise around the Antwerp docks. The speed dating service Dare to Date is offering a new concept in Antwerp that week: “Dating on Water”. Haven’t found your soulmate? Then you’ll still have a fun activity and new friends to look forward to.

People who think that you can only meet the love of your love through Tinder have it wrong. Apps such as Tinder and Happn makes dating easy but in recent years alternative dating concepts have become increasingly popular. Dare to Date is an example of this. They organize group events where you can meet new people under the lead of an experienced host. “In times of online dating apps, we want to create face-to-face meetings again. We aim to provide everyone with a fun and enjoyable evening,” he says. “If people can meet their dream partner, that’s a nice bonus, of course.”

Besides the classic speed dates in a bar, Dare to Date also has a new concept, “Dating on Water.” You meet new people during a cruise through the Antwerp harbor. “Our host will be hosting everyone on a private boat[.] There they will get a glass of champagne and finger foods,” says Jill de Graaf, the event manager at Dare to Date. “You will get a unique cruise through the Antwerp docks. Everyone gets to know each other personally during a short speed date, after which we will enjoy the beautiful view of the setting sun.”

For this concept the company is working together with Christophe Sepot, owner of samenvaren.be. In 2010, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 109 days with a rowing boat for a good cause. The adventurer also made a trip around the world a few years ago in which he had 80 dates around the world. In Australia, for example, he went on a date with Justin Timberlake’s stepsister.

Nowadays Sepot organizes cruises with his electric boat for everyone and now also for Dare to Date. “I happily welcome singles aboard my electric boat,” he says.

    IBJ's Federation

    Global Love Report – August 10, 2022
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

IBJ’s Federation recently reported that it has reached a new milestone. The Japan Marriage Consulting Federation that IBJ runs has reached 80,000 members through its 3,400 affiliated agencies.

IBJ first reached 70,000 members back in April 2021 and was able to reach 80,000 within 15 months and at a faster rate. Additionally, in July the number of new registrations increased by 111% compared to July 2021.

One of the main reasons for this increase is the fact that more people are switching from casual dating services to marriage agencies. Furthermore, the number of members in their 20’s has increased by 50% in 2021, compared to the numbers in 2018. Overall, agencies are seeing an increase in the number of younger people who are seeking out spouses.

IBJ provides the agencies under its association with training programs. They’ve also provided opportunities for member agencies to share their best practices and to exchange ideas.

With this increase in membership, IBJ will be able to create more opportunities for their members to meet the right person and make it easier for them to find a match. IBJ’s Federation is also launching a campaign to further increase members to over 80,000.

    Global Love Report – July 20, 2022
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

Matchmaking agency ZWEI, managed by IBJ, has started a partnership with Tokyo Nursing Association.

This is part of ZWEI’s plan to support companies and organizations who haven’t had the chance to date or to look for a spouse due to Covid. This goes hand-in-hand with their aim to help improve the total number of marriages in Japan, which has been in decline.

With this partnership, ZWEI will be able to help nurses who have not had the chance to meet someone—let alone find a partner—during the pandemic.

Tokyo Nursing Association will enter ZWEI’s corporate membership system, which already has 700 companies and organizations. Companies within the system are not charged for being part of it. Additionally, employees or members will also receive a discounted rate when they register with ZWEI.

So, ZWEI will introduce their services to the members of the nursing association and will provide interested members with their support.

  • Ideal Number of Dates Before a Relationship

    ideal number of dates

    Global Love Report – July 6, 2022
    English summary by Pamela Stephanie

Partner Agent, a Japanese matchmaking agency recently surveyed 100 matchmakers to find out their thoughts on dating. The survey was done as a reaction to a recent report by Japan’s Cabinet Office that revealed that 40% of single men in their 20’s and more than 20% of women of the same age group have no dating experience.

In the survey, the first question they asked was whether dating was necessary for men and women to deepen their connection before starting a relationship. It’s of no surprise that almost all agreed that it was necessary (99.0%), with most saying “strongly agree”.

The next question asked was whether they would prefer to have an in-person date. 83.5% of the matchmakers believe that it’s important to meet face-to-face so singles can build a connection.

Arguably, the most interesting result was the ideal number of dates before two people start a relationship. The most common response was 3-4 dates (57.4%). However, the next common response is that the number of dates doesn’t matter but it depends on the type of connection that the two people had during one date (25.7%). In third place: more than 5 dates (13.9%).

  • How I navigated the pandemic to build a successful matchmaking business

    successful matchmaking business

    Global Love Report – June 29, 2022
by Michelle Begy, Managing Director and Founder of Ignite Dating

It is always going to be tough launching a brand-new business, but throw a global pandemic into the mix and you have a potential recipe for disaster.

Just 10 weeks after our launch, the whole country went into lockdown. For an industry that thrives on personal contact and building relationships, there was no way of knowing the impact this was going to have on not only Ignite Dating, but the dating industry as a whole. Faced with a situation where our matchmakers were not able to meet their clients face-to-face, and in turn our clients could not meet up in person to date, there was a possibility that this could spell the end for my new venture, before it had even begun.

However, those that know me best have said that they admire my determination and grit, and in the face of adversity, there was only one thing to do. Companies around me were ‘moth balling’ their agencies and the general outlook in the industry was bleak. Instead of following suit, I took a different approach, if there was any money to be spent on matchmaking, I wanted to ensure it was spent with Ignite Dating.

    Success comes from strategic risk

As a start up, we had little to lose and to my mind a massive push was required to ensure we did not fall at the first hurdle. While other dating agencies decided to concentrate on the clients they already had to ride out the pandemic, I adopted a “push harder, work smarter and build faster” approach. Instead of waiting to see what happened as the pandemic unfolded, we concentrated on brand building by retaining the services of a PR agency, achieving a vast number of articles and comments in national press publications and numerous broadcast interviews. We also increased our online marketing spend by 200% and expanded the territories throughout the UK that we could offer our service in.

I also saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changes forced upon society rather than see them as impossible obstacles. We embraced the opportunities of lockdown and the more traditional relationship approach that it necessitated. People were looking for companionship and quality of introductions over quantity, so I set myself one rule, always listen to our clients and ensure our personalised service meet their needs. We ensured our clients could still meet their future partner in a safe and responsible way, in line with the ever-changing Government guidelines and offered a completely different perspective on virtual dating, while offering ongoing support and advice throughout every step of their journey, whether they were navigating their first Zoom date or meeting for a socially distanced walk in the park.

This determination to stay positive and swim against the tide allowed us to come out of lockdown stronger and in a better position than ever – something which looks set to continue. As restrictions eased, we saw a 350% growth in people taking up our services and greatly surpassed all original projections we set – despite the challenges that shaped the first two years of the business.

    A new world for dating

Now, for the first time in two years, it feels like the panic and disruption of the pandemic is finally coming to a close. While we have witnessed many businesses across a range of industry sectors close their doors for the last time, we have also seen those that disrupted the market and came out stronger than ever before – and Ignite Dating is proud to be in the latter.

The dedication and hard work over the last two years has paid off and we have seen a huge growth in not only our brand awareness but also our position within the market. From a team of two upon launch, we now have 12 Ignite Angels working throughout the UK as well as two offices – a head office in London and a regional office in the Midlands – to run our daily operations from. After such a long period having to keep our distance, it’s great to have my rapidly expanding team together again and we continue to ensure that we make plenty of time for regular catchups in-person for support and weekly team Zoom calls to inspire each other.

Networking has always been an essential part of how I’ve grown the business and it’s great to be out there meeting in person again. Through these events, I am always meeting other matchmakers, potential ambassadors and clients that are interested in the unique way in which Ignite Dating works and the multi award-winning service that we offer.

And it’s not just Ignite Dating that is seeing the benefits of coming out of the pandemic. Now the restrictions have lifted and people are feeling more confident about going out and meeting new people again, the future of dating looks even brighter. Our clients are back to being able to meet and date in person, assisted in their dating journey as always by our talented, expert matchmakers. We are so thrilled every time we hear about yet another successful date, or another engagement – and it makes all the hard work navigating a new dating landscape on their behalf worth it!

If the pandemic has taught me anything, it’s that not everything goes to plan. Despite your best efforts, you can never fully know what is going to happen in the future so it is important to remember that if the plan doesn’t work, change the plan – but never change the goal.

GLR Spotlight is an interview series featuring Matchmakers, Dating Coaches & Relationship Experts

    Global Love Report – June 22, 2022
    Interviewed by Global Love Report

GLR Spotlight was created to feature some of our industry peers as a way for our community to get to know one another – Learn from what has worked successfully, as well as gain different perspectives and insights into various business strategies. We hope to continuously grow as an industry together by sharing these best practices with everyone!

    About Darci Roberts

    Darci Roberts

Darci was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and has always been passionate about love and seeing good people find their true match.

Darci is the first certified matchmaker to launch a boutique matchmaking firm based in St. Louis. She has an educational background in Communications and has also studied sociology, psychology, and data analysis.

Global Love Report (GLR): Hi Darci! Thank you for granting us this interview! What was your career before entering the matchmaking industry?

Darci Roberts (DR): Prior to matchmaking, I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies, from the University of San Diego, and a Master’s Degree in Media and Strategic Communications, from The George Washington University. Then, I started to work for a social and racial justice non-profit organization, as their digital director. My training and education helped me develop my matchmaking and date coaching firm, Matched With Love. My interpersonal and communication skills are critical to successfully connecting Matched With Love clients with potential long-term partners.

GLR: Why did you decide to become a matchmaker?

DR: During my childhood, I remember my mom always saying to my brothers and I that the two most important decisions you make in your life are what you do, your career; and who you choose to spend your life with, your life partner. Throughout my life, I have been the friend that enjoyed connecting good people with each other. Before and during the pandemic, several of my friends and family members were looking for relationships, but could not find their person. Many talked about their frustrations and the challenges of dating during a pandemic along with their feelings of isolation and being too busy with their careers to find love.

Connecting people with similar needs and interests comes naturally to me. I created Matched With Love to help millennials who are looking for a long-term relationship, but have not found their person through dating apps and socializing. At Matched With Love, we infuse intention, love and care into our services. I couldn’t be happier to team up with Jasmine Mauss, who is Matched With Love’s dating and relationship coach. Jasmine has a background in couple and family therapy and she helps our clients develop and grow before and after they are in committed relationships.

GLR: Did your perception of what a matchmaker is or does change after being certified?

DR: My perception of what matchmakers do was reinforced through the certification program. I learned a lot through the classes and was able to ask important questions as I was creating my business. I learned that every matchmaking business is different and it is key to concentrate on your niche and what you enjoy about matchmaking.

GLR: What are you looking forward to as a matchmaker?

DR: I am looking forward to growing my business over time and seeing wonderful people find love and become a family. I am also excited to be a part of life changing love stories. There is no greater gift that I can give anyone in life other than helping them find love.

GLR: Which locations do you cover?

DR: At Matched With Love, we work with single young professionals in St. Louis, Missouri. Over time, we plan to expand to Washington, DC and California.

GLR: Have you met any other matchmakers? If so, how has that experience been? Are you open for collaboration in the future?

DR: Yes, I have met incredible matchmakers through the certification course and the Global Love Conference. I always enjoy networking with matchmakers and am open to collaborating in the future!

GLR: Do you have any words of advice for people who are still considering if they want to be a matchmaker or not?

DR: If you are considering becoming a matchmaker, I would definitely recommend getting certified. The certification program will not only educate you, but it will also help you decide whether matchmaking is really something you want to pursue. Make sure you are passionate about matchmaking and have long-term plans before you develop your business.

GLR: Thank you for your time, Darci!
