  • More Singles Interested in Matchmakers in Ireland

    Global Love Report – July 21, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

Matchmakers in Ireland are seeing a dramatic increase in enquiries from singletons in the last year or so. Their reasoning? 80% of people usually meet their potential dates within their social circles, at work or at their university campus.

Thanks to the pandemic, these face-to-face options are no longer available so they’ve resorted to going online.

That being said, matchmakers in Ireland are finding that more and more singles are actually moving away from online platforms. Though, according to one matchmaker, one of the reasons why it’s difficult for people to find a match is because they’ve restricted their search. One woman restricted her match to a maximum of 15 kilometers (over 9 miles) away from her location.

Intro Matchmaking reported that they’re seeing an increase of 150% in June for their year-to-year numbers. Feargal Harrington, its Co-Founder mentioned within the last 16 months they’ve had a massive increase in interest.

So much so that they’re actually turning people away every week. Mostly because, according to Harrington, they will only take clients who are looking for something long-term but who are also putting an effort into the search. They would only take on people that they know they can match.

Harrington mentioned that a lot of people are leaving online platforms for his agency because they can’t find what they’re looking for on those platforms.

  • Global Love Spotlight: Karina Datashvili

GLR Spotlight is an interview series featuring Matchmakers, Dating Coaches & Relationship Experts

    Global Love Report – July 21, 2021
    Interviewed by Adrina Ong

GLR Spotlight was created to feature some of our industry peers as a way for our community to get to know one another – Learn from what has worked successfully, as well as gain different perspectives and insights into various business strategies. We hope to continuously grow as an industry together by sharing these best practices with everyone!

    About Karina Datashvili

    Karina Datashvili

Karina Datashvili is the Senior Matchmaker and Dating and Relationship Coach at Simantov International matchmaking agency.

Karina was previously the Executive Director of the Holocaust Museum before she decided to try out matchmaking with Simantov International, at the behest of the agency’s founder.

After trying it out part-time, she then decided to become a matchmaker full time.

GLR: Hello, Karina! Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for us! Could you tell us a little about yourself and the agency you’re working for?

Karina Datashvili (KD): I am the Senior Matchmaker and Dating and relationship coach at Simantov-International. It was established in 1975 and provides matchmaking and relationship coaching service to Jewish Singles worldwide.

At Simantov International, there are no matchmaking algorithms; it’s all done the old-fashioned way — getting to know clients and pairing compatible people with each other. Not everyone who applies to be matched by Simantov is accepted as a client.

Due to the nature of its service, Simantov International is selective, which ensures success for clients. Simantov’s main goal is to help open-minded, single Jewish professionals find the right person who can help them pass on their long-held traditions and beliefs.

I think that the two most popular questions to be asked within the first conversation are: “Are you Jewish?” and “Are you married?”

    Both my answers – yes.

Regardless of religiosity, for non-Jewish people, it is challenging to talk about things like Shabbat, kashrut, Yom Kipur, etc. I understand why it is essential for our clients that their matchmaker has the same values.

About being married, I usually joke that “I would not dare to help you if I can’t help myself”. Meanwhile, I understand that it is not a requirement, but this makes some connection in the beginning.

GLR: What led you to feel that you wanted to pursue a career in helping singles?

KD: It was not planned; I started working five years ago just like a client manager, who is scheduling calls, sending mails and verifying documents.

In the beginning, I combined this work with my main job as an executive director of the Holocaust Museum. It was an excellent way to recover from the sad things connected to my main job.

I did it until the owner of Simantov International out found that I have 17 years of experience in HR and head-hunting and offered to let me try my hand at matchmaking.

I was surrounded by professionals who supported me at every step. It was a significant decision.

I was unsure until I started to have some success stories, then I had the confidence to make matchmaking my only job.

While working as a matchmaker, I studied at the Matchmaking Institute and was officially certified as a matchmaker and dating and relationship coach.

I am not going to stop studying so that I can be more successful and sensitive at my job.

The best part of our profession is happy feedbacks, for sure. I have no children of my own but I am responsible for at least five amazing babies born because of my job.

Now, being a matchmaker, I understand that it is not enough just to make the introduction. I believe that I need to help my clients not to disrupt everything after just one conversation – it’s the reason why they need coaching. I used to collaborate with amazing coaches from our industry but some clients feel more comfortable when they are working with one person, not with many.

GLR: Do you have any unique stories about working in this industry?

KD: There was a fantastic client, who was already an Agency client when I started working. At some stage of his membership, he made a special agreement with the Managing Director about a very intensive process which included three unique introductions every week.

Besides that, he wanted to communicate only with the Managing director, who had to do plenty of other things for other clients and for the agency. I was responsible for the search and selection and interviewing for him. Every week I needed to interview 30 ladies to select just three along with my other duties.

Meanwhile, he didn’t know about my job because he decided to be contacted and served only with Managing Director, so all my efforts were from the “underground”, behind the scenes.

I still admire how he could remember all of the beautiful ladies he was introduced to and not mix them up. Being a German, he was orderly about everything – regarding matchmaking, he had an Excel file where he had a report about every lady.

For me, it was the craziest time and a colossal pressure. He changed his requirements every week, and I was sure that I would die before we could match him. Finally, he was matched.

As a client, he received 84 introductions. And the funniest thing – that he was matched with a lady who had just joined the agency and this was the first introduction for her—and it became a match. So, 84 steps for one side and just 1 for the other to create this couple.

But it was at this point that I decided that I would never ever agree to participate in this kind of “marathon” again. It was great learning experience for me. I am happy that now I am allowed to decide what kind of contract to offer to the client and to find a way to cooperate that is best for both the client and our team.

GLR: Do you have any words of encouragement or reminders for existing Matchmakers/Dating Coaches & newcomers?

KD: We have a beautiful job. There can’t be any standard rules and guidelines that work for everyone because every client is unique. Just be aware that we can’t help everyone, and in most cases, it’s not our fault.

Our willingness to help, our efforts, and good intentions may not be enough; we can’t push people to feel happy and act according to our scenarios. Everything we can – it’s to be honest with ourselves first and not to take clients without believing in success.

And one more significant thing for me – not to stop learning from the professionals in the industry. It is impossible to know everything, but it’s possible to aim to make the best version of ourselves at any point in our lives, including our profession.

GLR: What was your favorite part of the online Science-Based Coaching course?

KD: My most favorite part were the online meetings with Dr. Terri Orbuch; the possibility to ask questions and to get support and answers, to feel the real interest and empathy.

GD: Thank you for your time, Karina!

  • Mobile Matchmaking in a Camper Van

parked camper van to illustrate mobile matchmaking

    Global Love Report – July 14, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

Sylvie Bourhis’ idea of mobile matchmaking has nothing to do with apps or even a phone! This French matchmaker decided to use a camper van in order to stay in touch with her clients while restrictions are in place due to the pandemic.

And she’s seeing several benefits from using the camper. Because she didn’t decorate the “Love Mobile” with hearts or anything ostentatious, people were reassured. So even if she did go to clients’ houses, other people would have no clue that it’s really a mobile office.

What’s more, being able to drive around clients to see the scenery is making them more open. They’re able to share more easily and they stay longer than before.

Bourhis has even decided to use the camper as her main work space—she’s going to stop renting office spaces in a number of cities and only keeping their main office in Brest.

  • What Can We Expect with Virtual Reality Dating?

woman wearing a VR headset to illustrate virtual reality dating

    Global Love Report – July 14, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

Virtual Reality Dating may be the next evolution of online dating. And some have argued that it could replace both online and face-to-face dates.

According to a report by Imperial College Business School in the UK and eHarmony UK, better internet speeds may finally make virtual reality dating possible.

There are plenty of possibilities with VR dating, as well. Because not only can people pick wherever they want as their dating spot, physical distance is less of an issue.

Furthermore, people can experiment with however they want their virtual self to look like. Whether they’d like it to be more realistic and matching their own looks or to change it completely.

Also, with regards to dating spots and activities, people can also choose more exhilarating dates. And because of “excitation transfer”, the adrenalin rush that they get from an exciting date may cause them to be more attractive to their date and vice versa.

But one of the things mentioned is in terms of date coaching. If someone have a date coach, it’s possible for them to accompany the person on their date—without being seen. So, the coach will be able to directly communicate with the client and give them advice during their date.

Of course, there’s also the question of whether or not a dating coach is tagging along on a date should be divulged to the other person on that date. Because it’s possible they would refuse to have a third person there. And if the dater doesn’t divulge it, then is it ethical for the other person?

  • Survey on Japanese Matchmakers Reveals Surprises

    Global Love Report – July 14, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

284 Japanese matchmakers working at marriage agencies in Japan replied to a survey conducted by marriage company IBJ.

    Becoming Japanese Matchmakers

According to the survey, since the pandemic, the number of marriage agencies being opened as a “side business” increased by 14%.
Of those that started the agency as a “side business”, 40% turned it into their main business.

The Japanese matchmakers were also asked the reason why they decided to start their matchmaking business. The most common reason (40%) is because they thought it’s a worthwhile job.

Some of the other reasons included: it allows them to use their past experiences, the structure of work was similar to my previous work, spouse recommended it to them because the spouse thought it would suit them, and so forth.

Respondents were asked what type of characteristic should a matchmaker have. 39% believe that they need to be a good listener, 27% believe they like to take care of people, and 22% said like to be involved with people.

    Business during the Pandemic

The respondents were also asked how their business were impacted by the pandemic. 70% reported that their work has changed since the pandemic. They’ve had to switch to online counseling more instead of face-to-face.

More than 70% of the respondents also said that the pandemic has actually had a positive impact on their business. With some of the respondents noting that loneliness has driven some clients to matchmaking agencies and people are more desperate to be married.

Others noted that because the meetings are now online, clients aren’t limited to just one meeting per day and were able to have more.

One the most common reasons why clients decided to use a matchmaking agency (62%) is because they feel impatient, especially regarding their age and their surroundings. So, they decided to meet someone and get married. 38% of the respondents said that they felt the need to use an agency because they weren’t going out due to the pandemic and were unable to meet new people.

    Previous Job

One of the questions asked was what type of industry was the matchmaker in before they decided to pursue matchmaking. The most common industries were: manufacturing; trading, distribution and retail; bridal; and education. See the graph below to see the full range of industries.

  • Dating Safety vs. Privacy

    CCTV tp illustrate dating safety

    Global Love Report – July 7, 2021
    Written by Pamela Stephanie

Online dating platforms have made it easier for singles to connect with other singles but dating safety is still a concern. After all, anyone can register with these platforms. Some platforms offer a cursory check but most apps don’t do that. And that’s why there are plenty of stories about users dealing with unwanted advances or even outright harassment.

    Vetting Process

For a matchmaker, vetting a client is an important part of the process. You can determine that the person really is genuine in their intentions—thus saving you the headache later. Background checks are also important—just in case you’ve missed something during your initial assessment of the client.

These are the two steps currently missing when someone signs up on an online dating platform.

Singles More Open to Background Checks

However, studies have shown that nowadays singles are more open to having a background check just to ensure their own dating safety.

A recent survey done by YouGov showed that at least 66% of single females have done some form of checking before meeting a match online. Of the options given on the survey—respondents could choose multiple answers—44% have searched their match’s name online. 51% have searched their social media profiles and 22% have even searched the match’s phone number online.

It’s interesting to note that the survey also asked if they have run a background check on their match. 13% of them did. In fact, on the same survey, 61% of single females and 60% of single males stated that they think dating apps should have background check information available on their potential dates.

How To Convince Potential Clients Your Agency is Better for Their Dating Safety?

So how do you convince them if dating platforms are starting to offer background checks too?

As a matchmaker, you actually have a couple of advantages. The main one is that you vet each client personally. That means you or someone in your company has spoken to the person. Whether it’s face-to-face or virtually, you have had direct contact with the person.

As we’ve mentioned earlier, anyone can open an account on dating sites or apps. They aren’t personally vetted by someone before they enter the database. And so, being a matchmaker, you already provide your clients with their very own 2-tiered security.

The second is that even though the Match group plan on offering background checks, from what they revealed so far, it does not seem to be a requirement. Therefore, it’s still relatively easy for a scammer or someone with bad intentions to open an account without people knowing who they are.

While some platforms are starting to use video to weed out catfishing, some see it as the bare minimum. And though Match group does apparently screen for sex offenders, they only do so on their paid apps. Free app users aren’t so lucky.

And here’s another reason why your matchmaking agency is better for them: Privacy. While you do vet them and run a background check on them, that information will stay private unless they tell you that it can be disclosed to another party.

Many agencies with high-profile clients conduct background checks and keep their clients’ information a secret after all.

We can’t really say how background checks will look like on these dating apps and websites. However, we can assume that the platform in question will be sharing more information. As a matchmaker, you can assure clients that their match has been vetted and are who they say they are—so you can assure one client and protect the other’s privacy at the same time. So, their dating safety is better with your matchmaking agency than if they chose an online platform.

  • Soulmate Festival in Italy: Mass for singles

basilica of padua to illustrate soulmate festival

    Global Love Report – July 7, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

A soulmate festival in Italy was held on the 19th of June in Padua. The festival is based on the festivals held in South American countries and in Portugal.

The aim of the popular festival is so that singles can “find meaning in life and a soulmate”. This is according to Father Oliviero, the rector of the Basilica of Padua, who hails from Portugal. The mass is open for singles between 30 to 50 years old and the entrance is free.

Because of the pandemic, the seating was reduced from 815 to 350. More seating are provided outside, along with a big screen.

The previous soulmate festival—before last year’s break due to Covid—was attended by 600 singletons from all over Italy, though the festival’s waiting list was in the thousands.

But the festival isn’t even the only reason why singles flock to Padua. On June 13th, during the feast of the patron saint, thousands of young women from all over the world flock to Padua.

The museum inside the church has many keepsakes donated by women who have successfully found a match after visiting the Basilica. These include: locks of hair, wedding dresses, weddings rings, and shoes from their firstborn baby.

  • Intentional Dating: Singles Now Serious about Dating

woman looking at phone to illustrate intentional dating

    Global Love Report – July 7, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

There’s a new dating trend: Intentional Dating.

So what exactly is “intentional dating”? Well, the pandemic is causing singles to be more serious about their dating lives and getting rid of bad dating habits. They’re looking for long-term relationships and becoming more intentional about their dating. This is what the statistics are saying, according to Hinge.

Two-thirds of Hinge users are thinking of changing their dating ways once it’s safe to meet offline. Almost half of them now have a healthy dating habit.

Singles are more likely to screen their matches rather than casting a wider a net.

This slow approach is a good thing, according to matchmaker Susan Trombetti, the CEO of Exclusive Matchmaking. According to her, people spend too much time swiping a lot to find someone perfect that they’re essentially wasting their time.

With a more focused approach, they will be able to find better matches. And, Trombetti said, the current “intentional dating” trend is advantageous to singles because there are now more people in the dating pool looking for a serious relationship.
