    LGBT matchmaking

    Global Love Report – August 25, 2021
Summarized in English by Pamela Stephanie

The Japan LGBT Support Association, has started their own LGBT matchmaking service in order to help their members find life-long relationships. The service is now accepting registrations from members of the Association.

Currently, the association is in partnership with 78 matchmaking agencies throughout Japan. The Association first worked with 56 agencies back in April before working with a further 22 agencies in July. The matchmakers involved are all professional matchmakers who completed training with the Association and have signed a contract with them.

In fact, the training is continuous. The main aim for these matchmakers is to become matchmakers that the LGBT community can work with. And to help people in the community to find a life partner.

The Association aims to expand their cooperation with 100 companies for their third round of recruitment on September 2nd.
Their plan is to rely on the traditional hands-on style of matchmaking for their members.

What’s more, the counseling and registration are currently offered free of charge.

One of the people who registered, a 40-year-old woman in Kansai, was amazed that they offered this level of service for free. She also stated that she had been waiting for this kind of LGBT matchmaking service to help her find a life-long relationship. She also added that it made her think that she wouldn’t have to give up on having a family in the future.

  • A Profile of Russian Matchmaker Galina Karaseva

heart balloons in a street in moscow to illustrate Russian matchmaker

    Global Love Report – August 25, 2021
A Summary Article by Pamela Stephanie

The number of singles in Moscow has multiplied, according to Russian Matchmaker, Galina Karaseva. Dating apps aren’t sufficient in helping singles find their match. In fact, matchmakers are in demand, thanks to the sheer number of singles currently looking.

Before becoming a matchmaker, Karaseva worked as an Accountant. However, she found the main work depressing—she would rather be out meeting and talking to people. Instead, she became a matchmaker.

She worked at one of the oldest matchmaking agencies for three months before she decided to purchase it for herself and run it as her own.

    Client Types

Karaseva opts for clients who will have a long-term relationship and thus, dissuades older male clients looking for a young match.

She claims that nowadays these ladies can earn their own living. And the young ladies who decide to match with older men would end up leaving the men for someone their age.

    Method

Karaseva asks any potential client to fill in a questionnaire with general questions. After that, she asks more detailed questions regarding the client’s relationship history.

A warning sign, for her, is when clients criticize their ex because these kinds of clients are difficult to help. She stated that if the client has had a negative experience previously, that they should first find a way to overcome that before they start to date. In the end, it’ll be a hindrance.

Karaseva has her own database of singles for her clients. She also collaborates with other matchmakers in order to find a match. But for the truly difficult case, she does turn to dating platforms but she states that it’s difficult to find a match using those platforms.

In those cases, she would inform the client that they will set up and run an account on their behalf. Though this type of case is quite rare.

    Date Coaching

Although she is a matchmaker, Karaseva does give some pointers to her clients. For example, she gives them advice about what to do and what to talk about. She tells them that a first date should not go over one and a half hour. This way, it would leave them with enough to talk about but hopefully they won’t accidentally spill too much information.

The first date should leave the person a little hungry for more, she stated.

    The Negative Side of Things

Because she’s responsible for two strangers, Karaseva says that if there are any problems, they come directly to her. So, it’s a very precarious position to be in. Even big agencies have had issues with clients before.

Some clients even complain that their match could be “better”. However, she has had her share of couples who matched and then ended up married. “Otherwise, we would have closed a long time ago,” she added. With matchmakers who have worked for a long time in the industry, they won’t even need to advertise. They’d have people approaching them based on recommendations alone.

Recent Changes She’s Seeing as a Russian Matchmaker

Previously, her client base tends to be older however Karaseva mentioned that nowadays she’s getting women in their mid-twenties who are looking for a match. She mentions that it’s more difficult these days to find a match by themselves in the real world. What’s more, people tend to be too busy to actually look for someone to meet. And even dating platforms are still a hassle for some people.

  • Singles Finding Love on Clubhouse Audio App

    clubhouse app on phone

    Global Love Report – August 18, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

Singles are finding their match on the audio chatroom app, Clubhouse. In fact, a high-profile couple were recently married after they met on Clubhouse and has become the app’s de-facto couple.

In fact, seeing a number of couples who’ve met on the app, Clubhouse has even created “Shoot your Shot” room where singles can meet each other. The rules are that you need to divulge a little about yourself and to be transparent on what you’re looking for. Also, you need to say if you fancied anyone in the room. If both parties are interested, they move can move further along on Instagram.

So why us Clubhouse attracting singles?

According to Jasbina Ahluwalia, founder of Intersections Match, the fact that Clubhouse is audio-only is its main draw. People have grown weary of the constant swiping on dating apps such as Tinder. And an audio-only medium where you’re not drowned out by visuals is a welcomed reprieve for some.

Ahluwalia noted that relying on audio makes the experience more real and more intimate. It also allows for vulnerability and people are more confident—without the added distractions of the visuals.

  • Lockdown Relationships Fizzling Out

paper heart torn in the middle to illustrate lockdown relationships

    Global Love Report – August 18, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

For some, relationships that started virtual—on dating platforms such as Tinder or Bumble or Hinge—didn’t quite work out in reality.

So, what may be causing these relationships that burn brightly online to quickly extinguish when it came to face-to-face meetings?

According to Matchmaker Alex Mellor-Brook, co-founder of Select personal Introductions, one of the reasons why these relationships don’t last is because they’re “app relationships” and not true relationships.

Mellor-Brook compared lockdown relationships to having a pen pal. While these do sometimes work out, he points out that the majority of them do not. Mainly because social media isn’t truly genuine, the content that people post there is curated so they’re full of images that may be considered “perfect”.

“You bring in real life and that’s where it crumbles,” he stated.

Furthermore, Mellor-Brook pointed out that chatting with someone through an app may be easy for someone who’s good at typing but in order to meet in person, they need other skills.

  • Increase in Bad Behaviors During Dates

    bad behaviors

    Global Love Report – August 11, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

A Japanese Matchmaker, Miyuki Uekusa, who works for the matchmaking/marriage counseling agency is seeing a rapid change in the matchmaking industry in Japan. She’s also seeing an increase in bad behaviors during clients’ blind dates.

    Disregard of Covid Protocols

One such example is when one of her clients, Emi (pseudonym), who is in her 40s and has been looking for a husband for over a year, went on a blind date with a man in his 50’s who’s a company manager—and also a client of a different dating agency.

Unfortunately, the man didn’t seem to follow Covid safety protocols; he didn’t wear a mask, and spoke close to her face.

Emi herself didn’t dare to ask him to wear a mask. She also felt that because this was their first meeting and the man himself owned a company and had a high income so she was afraid he would reject her.

According to Uekusa, it’s common for women, especially in their 40’s or older to refrain from saying what they really think during dates when they’re having trouble finding a match.

In the end, Emi ended up on a date with the man for a few hours—they moved to a bar for drinks after one hour of talking. During this time, Emi was very uncomfortable.

The following day, Emi had a fever of almost 39°C (approx. 102°F) even though she had another blind date planned for that week and the following week. Another blind date that she had been looking forward to, with a dentist, was unfortunately cancelled.

Unfortunately, the dentist wanted to be married as soon as possible so he arranged for other dates—he couldn’t afford to wait for her, since he had yet to meet her. To add to her woes, because she had cancelled the date, she was forced to pay a penalty fee.

Although her fever may not have been the date’s fault, Emi still had regrets. She wished she had asked him to wear a mask or not to sit close to her. Even when she got well, there were lingering psychological issues. In the end, she switched all her in-person blind dates to virtual dates instead.

    Unwanted Advances

Another case has to do with a different client, Kana. She went on a date with a different company owner. He was too forward from the beginning, approaching her suddenly to ask to sit next to her, calling her with a cutesy nickname, pretending to be her boyfriend.

Kana was very uncomfortable, particularly because he was staring at her chest. However, he had a very good income and he was actually pleasant to talk to.

However, after the date, he was very persistent. First it started out normally with him saying he can’t wait to see her again. But then it became more and more rude and lewd.

This caused Kana to ask for the relationship to end and for him to delete her contact information.

Uekusa had to step in and actually had a discussion with the matchmaker in charge of the man, who was baffled by the news—and his behavior. In fact, they had never had any complaints about the man before. However, due to his behavior, he violated the terms of the agreement and was told never to contact Kana again.

    Persistent and Belligerent

The last story is about a client who is in her 40’s, Mana, who owns a salon. She was matched with someone around the same age with an annual income of more than 10 million yen (approx. US$90,000).

However, things were bad from the start. Firstly, at the beginning of the date, he gave her his business card. One of the rules of the agency is to never exchange any contact information during the blind date. And so, Mana refused.

The man didn’t back down, however. He kept saying it’s normal to offer a business card and to receive one in return. When she refused again, he began to berate her.

But the date progressed and Mana explained that she had to leave after one hour due to a prior engagement. But near the end of the date, the man asked her to come with him for a drive.

Mana reminded him that she couldn’t, she even explained that she has a client at her salon.

This, in turn, made the man unhappy. Complaining that he specifically rented a car for that day and that she would be rude if she were to turn him down.

It was then that they began to argue. In fact, the argument grew so heated and loud that a waiter actually approached their table and asked if everything was OK.

The man’s behavior was so bad that Mana became scared and called Uekusa from the restroom. Uekusa advised her to go home straight away and to tell him that the matchmaking agency told her to go home.

Uekusa ended up calling Mana that evening to follow up with her and stayed on the phone for an hour, comforting Mana who was crying due to anger and fear.

    Moving Forward

People’s mental state can change when they’re facing an uncomfortable social situation, especially one that’s linked to a big, once-in-a-lifetime event such as marriage. The true quality of a matchmaker’s work will shine through as matchmakers are further tested in the future.

  • Ignite Dating: Success After Lockdown Launch

    Global Love Report – August 11, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

Founder of Ignite Dating, Michelle Begy, launched her matchmaking agency just a couple of months before lockdowns began in the UK.
Despite the odds, she and her team managed to grow her business in the 18 months since.

Her company offered virtual dating, offered advice to clients, and sought out ways to make the situation advantageous for them.

They also had a different approach than other matchmaking agencies, since they only had 10 weeks of normalcy before the country went into a lockdown. Begy divulged that instead of focusing on existing clients, they focused on marketing.

They did targeted marketing on areas that their agency covered and managed to get their name in the media by way of a PR company.

And after the lockdown was lifted, Ignite Dating is seeing a surge in interest.

Their growth is reflected not only in the number of clients and surpassing their financial projections; their team grew from two to five from the start to the end of the pandemic. They’ve also expanded to two offices and to six regions in the UK.

  • How Technology Can Help the Matchmaking Industry

how technology can help the matchmaking industry

    Global Love Report – August 11, 2021
A review article by Pamela Stephanie

Taylor Wade, Co-Founder of Ambiance Matchmaking, talks about how technology can help the matchmaking industry.

Wade noted that not everyone can afford a bespoke, high-end matchmaker. Due to this, there’s room for cooperation between dating platforms and experienced matchmakers.

    Blockchain

Wade sees a big potential in blockchain, in terms of how it can improve the matchmaking industry. The use of this technology can help in creating an “identity management system”. One of the biggest issues today is fake accounts and users not divulging their real identity, for example.

However, some companies are already using blockchain to authenticate users with the use of face recognition or voice recognition—data that’s encrypted and saved in blockchain.

    Artificial Intelligence (AI)

One frequent complaint by users is the fact that filtering out incompatible users take a lot of time and “swiping”. However, the use of machine learning can help create a better list of potential matches for users using their preferences.

In fact, there’s already an advanced way that AI is being used in matchmaking in the form of AIMM (The Artificially Intelligent Matchmaker), which uses photos and audio as introductions to matches all the while providing coaching and guidance. Additionally, future AI use can be arranging dates and feedback.

    Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality combines real life and virtual reality, this is arguably a better choice than full VR which may be off-putting for some.

Dating app Flirtar is doing something like this. By using the app, matches can be seen right in front of them thanks to the use of geolocation combined with the AR technology of the app.

    DNA Matchmaking

DNA Matchmaking is the idea of finding your match using your DNA. Currently, the DNA Romance app does this. The creator, Dr. Tim Sexton believes that people with opposite immune system genes end up being better matches versus those with similar genes due to better chemistry between them. The use of DNA collection kits or uploading a DNA profile is necessary in order to find matches.

    The Future

There are a lot of uncertainties with regards to how exactly the industry can utilize existing technology and what kind of changes that will lead to. However, Wade says that both matchmakers and online dating platforms should look into whether or not emerging tech can be utilized by their business and how technology can help the matchmaking industry.

  • Indonesian Agency Heart Inc’s booming business

couple holding hand to illustrate Indonesian matchmaker

    Global Love Report – August 4, 2021
A translated article by Pamela Stephanie

“If we’re talking about love, it’s a life-long journey,” said Zola Yoana in an interview with IDN Times. The woman better known as Zola is the founder of a matchmaking company called Heart Inc. At the company, she’s a matchmaker and a relationship coach for her clients.

    1. The Impact of the pandemic on the development of the matchmaking business: it has tripled!

It has been 8 years since Zola founded Heart Inc. Now, the business has been relaunched with new branding and a new concept. “On July 11th, on my birthday, I rebranded Heart Inc by Zola Yoana. The concept has also changed,” she concluded.

There are a number of services that she manages, including matchmaking, relationship coaching, and image consulting. The thing that has changed from the new look of Heart Inc is the concept: which puts forward a person’s love journey. She said, “So, I don’t just help them find the right person. But I also support them so that they’re successful in their relationship in terms of fostering a healthy and intimate relationship.”

The matchmaking process itself underwent several changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation. Some clients postponed the dating process and did the “getting to know” session virtually.

Before doing any matchmaking activities, this 37-year-old woman usually has a live chat session with her clients to get to know them better. “I have to personally meet with my clients, I have to sit with them for at least one hour to get to know more about their personal life. What are their issues, what their previous love story was like, how their character is like, what the aim of their love life is,” she added.

However, this obstacle is not a big problem in the growth of her business. Zola admits that the pandemic has actually brought benefits to Heart Inc. She said, “during the pandemic, our business actually tripled. A lot of people chose to stay at home and be more careful with online dating where it’s not clear who the other person in.”

    2. “Find a partner is part of life’s journey as well. We have to know what we are like and the kind of person that we want,” said Zola.

In the first three years of building Heart Inc, she realized that there was still a stigma attached to the process of matchmaking. This made a lot of people doubt the matchmaking activities that Zola does.

One of those things are that a lot of people think that people who look to a matchmaker for help are people who are desperate about their love life. Zola refutes this, saying, “In fact, you know what you want, that’s why you went to the matchmaker. That means that you don’t want to meet random people again. Desperate is when you know your standard but you lower that standard because you met someone.”

Over time, a lot of people are starting to become more accepting to the work that she does. The age range of her clients is younger now compared to when she first started her business. “In the past, my clients were, on average, 35 years old. The youngest client that I have right now is 27 years old,” she said.

To take part in the program offered by Heart Inc., potential clients can register on their official website. Then, the recruiting team will filter their profile. The second screening process will continue after the prospective clients meet with Zola. “After talking about all kinds of things then I offer them a membership that is suitable for them. Some are for a period of 6 months and also 1 year,” she said.

According to her, this matchmaking program that takes place globally needs to be filtered. Because there are some prospective clients who don’t understand that the concept of love takes time and process. “Finding a partner is part of life’s journey as well. We have to know what we are like and the kind of person that we want,” said Zola.

    3. Zola studied at the Matchmaking Institute for a year

Zola studied at the Matchmaking Institute for a year. While studying there, Zola learned about how to build a matchmaking business and human relations theories. “Speaking about matchmaking, it’s all about intuition, it’s an art. So, it’s like a calling, it’s about helping people, right. That’s why I call it a happiness business,” she said.

This woman with a hobby of traveling is the only certified matchmaker in Indonesia. She has also studied Science-based relationship coaching. Zola’s relationship coach activities has a personal concept. Because according to her, each person has a different relationship problem.

From her matchmaking and coaching activities, Zola admits that she is more grateful in living her life. He said, “Every time I had a problem, but when I hear clients sharing their personal life, I realize that there are a lot more problems that other people out there are experiencing.”
The impact felt by her own clients also differs, according to Zola, one of which is to create hope. She said that in the matchmaking process, clients can develop their own personal growth.

For Zola, the problem of love is not something that can be learned through theory alone. “We don’t learn about love at school, right. If you join Heart Inc, it’s not only about matching, but it’s about your life journey,” she concluded.

    4. This is the difference between the matchmaking process at Heart Inc and online dating

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the problem of finding a partner is a challenge for some people. According to Zola, one of the underlying things is that there a lack of opportunity and time to meet someone. That’s why the getting to know process is mostly done online.

According Zola, there are a few significant differences between Heart Inc’s matchmaking process and online dating apps. The first concerns the security of the user’s profile.

“Through an application, you create your own profile, you can see and talk to anyone. However there’s no screening process at all. So, it’s possible that it’s a false profile,” she said. She emphasized that not all dating applications have a negative impact on its users but caution is needed to go through all the processes.

As explained in the previous point, in the services offered by Heart Inc, there are two screening processes that each potential client have to go through. The screening process and background check is done in a confidential or closed manner. “If it’s online dating, it’s like you’re finding a date. Meanwhile, with my service, it’s like you’re finding the one,” she added.”

During the 8 years of building the business Zola has never given a guarantee that her clients will definitely marry or date. However, she makes sure that each client meets with someone who fits their profile and has the same core values.

Zola feels that there are many unique matchmaking experiences that she has gone through. But, in all of the events, she’s happiest when she matches her client with someone who is outside of their criteria. “They think that it’s not possible with someone of this type, but actually it’s more suitable. Because I can see that they will be a suitable couple,” she added.

    5. The turning point of Zola’s life began at the age of 36. She learned that showing a vulnerable side isn’t a sign of weakness.

Zola’s birthday is on 11th of July 1984. This woman whose zodiac is Cancer admitted that she experienced a turning point on her 36th birthday, in 2020. “So, when someone says life begins at 40, my life began at 36,” she said with a chuckle.

At that time, Zola realized that becoming vulnerable or showing a fragile side is a valuable thing. As someone who works in the matchmaking industry, she confessed that she is familiar with all the theories on love and romance. However, she failed in directly implementing the intimate side.

“Because when I met my current partner, it was then that I learned about vulnerability. I felt a deep connection with myself and my partner. So, I can create a deep emotional intimacy,” she said.

This is the basis for Heart Inc’s re-branding process. She revealed, “when I went through that, that is also what I’m offering to my coaching. I’m focusing more on that. How to build intimacy and how to be vulnerable.”
